Build for Dad

My father in law's q6600 rig is finally starting to kick the bucket and he has asked me to part together a new PC. I need just the innards, no keyboard, mouse or monitor.

The budget is $800 roughly and the only thing he has requested is that the build include a SSD. His primary uses for the PC are watching online shows and facebook type games. He would like some sort of dedicated GFX card though.

Please use Newegg.ca or Canada Computers to price out the parts as he will be ordering the whole package from one or the other.

thanks for reading and all build suggestions (AMD/INTEL) are welcome except for APU's and dual core cpu's, i want this to be as future proof as possible as he does not upgrade very often.

Hmm, OK, but:
-Why do you need a CPU cooler? It includes one and I didn't think you were going to OC.
-How much storage does he need? Would a slightly bigger SSD be sufficient rather then having tiny SSD+ storage HDD... Even then, you could get a cheaper 5400/5900RPM drive for the storage if you're gonna boot from the SSD.
-That 650W PSU is totally overkill!

A solid build. A little productivity-heavy, but that depends on the intent of the build. I'd consider dropping the heatsink and cutting the 2TB down to 1 for the sake of bolstering the GPU, but that's my $0.02. A 650Ti boost would be really solid for 1080p gaming.

The SSD is solid so long as he understands he should move big data to the HDD.

*Edit* Yeah, the power supply is definitely a little overkill unless you're thinking he might want to replace the video card with something fairly powerful somewhere down the line (i.e 300W plus) The system at this point easily ducks in under Corsairs 430W model.

why is ncix not a store option? i just did an online order, picked up in markham warehouse

what about memoryexpress? though they might have high prices... maybe tigerdirect depending on sales

are you on any of the email lists? i'm on newegg & TD's, have not bothered with ncix's, but you can just go to their sale pages (too much stuff to sift through!)

be careful with the gfx card prices, at ~$110 i've seen all kinds of things with sales/rebates, big question is if you could score a 650ti or 7850... but... i guess he wont be doing heavy games right

an idea for the ram is to use an 8gb single stick

the psu seems overpowered & thus you're spending extra?

the hard drive is not much of a deal, 3TB hangs around $120 by now, basically $40/GB costs (yes i'm including greener drives, but if you're putting large movies on there for example, you dont need good random access... the sequential speed is fine due to platters being so dense)

what case are you using?

If there is no gaming, I don't see much of a reason to even get a dedicated card all together. the IGP in an Haswell chip or Trinity APU will be fine.

one thing though i left out a case, but i will let him go to Canada Computers and pick out one suitable for him (ie. no LEDS or retarded robot looking cases)
