Ok so a buddy of mine is wanting to build a new rig and $1300 is about his budget maybe with a little more. I figure he probably doesn't need to go with an SSD and Raptor will do just fine. Plus, he can save that money and buy a better card. So what do you guys think? Suggestions?

Ditch the Raptor and replace it with a 1TB or 1.5TB drive which will knock the price down unless he really needs a 10K RPM drive.

Done. Replaced it with a Western Digital Caviar Black WD5002AALX 500GB 7200 RPM

Price is now $1,259.91. He doesn't need any more than 500Gb.

I'd reccomend a 570 with a better cooler. Also, a Case?

Windows 7 Home Premium is usually enough unless he needs the professional version for work.

Thought Home Premium had some issues with it? I know I was recommended to Professional minimum and I only use that or better in builds.

Thanks for pointing that out. Completely forgot to put a case in there. That'll be more on his part on what he wants.

That's mainly why I opted for Professional, because I heard that too.

if your friend is only gonna use one gfx card, you could save about $30 and go with the tx650

No issues with Home premium, professional has more features like the xp mode.

Thought Home Premium had some issues with it? I know I was recommended to Professional minimum and I only use that or better in builds.

The two substantial differences between Premium and Pro are in software support and memory usage.

Microsoft viewed home users as "not needing" support for a robust windows xp mode. This is a problem if you've got older programs, but isn't a huge issue for most users.

Artificial RAM caps suck. Microsoft decided to reintroduce them in 7, with Professional having none (you won't reach 192 GB of RAM in this generation) and Premium being 16 GB. If you've got a SB board with 4 slots, you can populate all 4 with 4 GB dimms without a problem. If you're a crazy power user, the 16 GB will be a real limiter for the new 2011 socket (whenever it actually comes out...).

All the other differences only influence niche users. If you know enough to desire file system encryption, you wouldn't be asking about the differences (not to mention the better, free programs out there...). Desktops don't generally move around a lot (location aware printing isn't a priority), and the other features are for power users or techs fixing your computer.

To summarize my long winded self; Home Premium will save you a bit of money, and should be fine for the average user. The rest of the build looks good, and the only personal advice I could give is to get a 1 TB HDD, not because of the space but because they are the pricing sweet spot right now (best dollar/GB pricing, and where most of the mature and reliable hardware is).

1293.9 if you minus the mail-rebates from full price of 1358. Can probably pick a better SSD though.

Due to the specs you published first, i supposed this is gonna be a gaming PC, so i took some parts and realized you could be really missing stuff, like the SLI capability for that GTX 570, having a SLI board and a weak PSU not worth the buy of such a powerfull card:shadedshu.

I changed a little bit the specs counting on the best GPUs for the money thanks to Tomshardware (here) a nice graphics card for your friend could be AMD Radeon HD 6950, in average is bit better than a GTX 560 Ti and you can crossfire this with a 750Watt power supply beeing a really big deal. :)

Windows Pro is not really necessary when comes to gaming, and comsumes more space in the hard drive:banghead:.

Ohhh i included a Hyper 212 Plus, so he can overclock this processor and the power supply will handle graphic overclock in crossfire too. :rockout:

Thank you so much for all the input, guys. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the TPU community. I'd just like to relay the information that he's given me and he's sticking to it. He's a bit hardheaded. He's an Nvidia guy and he refuses to buy an ATI card. Not trying to start any flame wars here, just giving you what he would like in this build. He's doesn't want to do SLI. He just wants one powerful card for now.

I've updated the list with the new HDD and I'm gonna have to check with him and see what kind of case he wants. I'm going to be the one building it so would it be safe to get a full size tower as opposed to a mid-sized tower? Also, aside from a case, is there anything at all wrong with what I have on there? I just want to make sure all the parts are compatible with each other.

And will that 750W be enough for a 570?

Thanks

I updated a new option with the GTX 570 he wanted since the begining. :p

Due to the size of the GTX 570 wich is ~ 11" with the power cables, i changed the case by a full size one, then you can work without problems :)
Also, aside from a case, is there anything at all wrong with what I have on there? I just want to make sure all the parts are compatible with each other, and will that 750W be enough for a 570?
Every part is compatible, indeed the comunnity is clever and they added an Sata II SSD considering that you can occupy the Sata III ports with HDDs wich are slower and the port can help them. And finally, yes the GTX 570 should work without issues with the 750Watts power supply, but i canged it and added one with better value cause you can SLI with that in the future :D:D:D

ditch that reference 570, and get a Twin Frozr III GTX570, Asus DirectCU II 570 or gigabyte. The reference 570s have vrm/power circuitry issues when overclocking.

It's about the price buddy, and then get a second of those for SLI is gonna be harder and more expensive.

Remember that with OEM Windows you're limited to that motherboard. New motherboard = new license. You sometimes can get around it though if you call the activation center (or do some hacking I assume) but officially it's tied to the motherboard.
