Hi, i always thought the first pci-ex and the the third one are X16 2.0. my 5870s are installed that way yet gpu-z reports one of them are running @ X4 speed. Am I doing something wrong here or is it just a bug in gpu-z?

yeah that is the way I installed them. I guess its just a bug then right? what else can be causing this?

You may have to disable PCI-E Link State Power Management in Windows Power Settings. You could try reinstalling drivers. I've seen a 'fix' mentioned about setting the PCI-E frequency in the bios to 101 to fix this as well.

well it appears that one of my 5870s are faulty. I will try it on my x38 rig tomorrow to confirm this. Currently running my cards x16/x16 without any problems. my tri-fire plans go out the window right now...

Are you having other problems? Wasn't your issue that you're cards weren't running x16+x16? Or was this with trifire?

x16/x16 not working properly was the problem. Today I got a pair of used 5870s and i was planning going trifire. I was worried about pushing my psu to the limit by installing all so i was going to wait till i get a new psu for trifire. That x16/x16 problem came out of nowhere :)
Now it seems one of the used cards is faulty so that was the cause of x16/x4 problem. other two cards running happily at x16/x16
