Would a Celeron D 2.8GHz with a FSB of 533Mhz and 256KB Cache give me an increase of performance?

Yes, though it would be minimal. It may help with basic software, but if you are a gamer or anything don't hope for too much.

How much minimal? I play tons of games, BF2, Call of duty 4, C&C3 ect. Even if it was minimal should i still switch it?

It would give you a slight increase in performance but nothing really phenomenal. If you're spending good money, just wait and get something better like a core2duo or quad.

Exactly.. I had a P4 at 3.02ghz in my freaking laptop for 4 years. Granted the thing was a furnace but it was kickass in '03!

Same problem here i have a P4 2.4 ghz at this moment I'm playing cod4 and Rainbow six las vegas. I'm planning to upgrade to the E2140 but according to cod4 minimum requirements the E2140 is to slow but my cpu just reached the minimum. Does this mean my old P4 chip out pace the E2140 at stock speeds ?

The E2140 is much faster than a P4, the E2140 is a budget processor and should play COD 4 easily as long as the rest of your hardware such as graphics card and memory is sufficient. The E1240 is known for it's overclocking properties, but this is only true with a decent motherboard. Personally for longevity I'd get a E4500 processor (or Q6600 for a quad setup). What graphics card are you running as it would influence COD's playability more than the processor?

I have a 2.2GHz P4 with a FSB of 400Mhz and 512KB Cache

Would a Celeron D 2.8GHz with a FSB of 533Mhz and 256KB Cache give me an increase of performance?

I haven't seen any official benchmarks, but I doubt it would make much difference in terms of frame rates as both processors are below the minimum standard for today's gaming. Your better of getting a better graphics card such as the 3850, 3870, 8800GS, 9600 GT, or 8800GT. But even with the best graphics card your slow processor and limited ram would be a bottleneck. I recommend finding the cheapest motherboard with AGP and PCIx slots and use your x1650 card until you can afford a better card. Meanwhile get the cheapest dual core processor you can afford such as E1240 or E1280 (recommended E4500 or better) as they can play COD4 easily.

Im running my P4 2.4 chip with a 7600 GT and DDR2 800 mhz in dual channel my motherboard allows me to raise my fsb to 1600 mhz but that wouldn't be possible with a P4

There are various Pentium 4's under different code names Prescott, Northwood, Willamette, so it's difficult to assess your situation with the limited information you've told me. Plus such a FSB over clock would be dependant on motherboard limitations. The bottom line is your P4 is too slow for today's gaming and no amount of small over clocking would justify keeping it. The 7600 GT graphics card is old and slow, however it's capable of running COD4 at medium settings when coupled with a decently new processor, you've shot yourself in the foot for gaming having an antique CPU and GPU

Thanx Darren but i tend to run games at medium theres to much conflict in the high end range. I'm upgrading my cpu first cause i use my pc for 30 percent games and 70 percent office no point in going for 8800 ultra sli but i will upgrade to 8800 gt when the prices comes down even further just for direct x 10. Here in South Africa pcs can get expensive a 8800 gtx is still going for R7000 thats about $900 american dollars here. I'll go for the E4500
