I like Noctua, but their colour scheme is a bit ... unique. DH14 gets my vote over Silver Arrow, but since that SneekyPeet suggested we look at lighter coolers, I am now not too sure whether you should get a big cooler.

Ok, as a personal owner of 2 i7 2600k's and simply have 3 more I'm building and testing at work currently I can for one say I HIGHLY doubt the ability of this chip on even a semi norm to be able to do 5ghz on it's OEM cooler! No it's not a great cooler it's the same little piece of junk you got with Lynnfields.

Currently I have mine at 4.2ghz on my Eco with a fast fan on it running 100% and I'm touching 68-69c while stress testing, you need on average 1.35+ volts for 5ghz, I'm at 1.2, that's a fair jump before you even consider the clock speed difference and extra current draw, did I mention that's with HT off?

I have had these chips under a Thermaltake Fenrir, Gield Tranquillo, Megahalem, Coolit Eco120, OEM Cooler, Coolermaster V6-GT, and Xigmatek Balder all with similar results on over a dozen chips.

Because at 4.8 ghz with 1.38ish V, temps seem to be reaching 7x C in Prime with SA ( found it somewhere while doing my small search). So a smaller cooler will add another 3-5 degrees. So while I strongly belive that IBT is complete waste of time, since the amount of stress it pushes on CPU is just insane, and so are the temps ppl get there, I do belive that Prime and OCCT temps are achiavable in benchmarking and if I'm not mistaken I once had similar results temp-wise in METRO 2033 ( lols). + I always add my benefit of the doubt that my temps will be a little higher due to my PSU not being modular and thus I can't put all the cables away, which abstructs the airflow a bit, and I usually have a bit of a bad luck when it comes to CPU's, so the chance have it I will have a bit of a higher voltages then your avarege at that OC, which will add another couple degrees. And if I'm to get Venomous X with 2 fans ( which rival SA, and h14 at that point) it will cost more then getting a stock SA or h14.

As long as your cables are even moderately clean you probably wont even get a 1c difference as long as they are not like literally directly blocking your heatsink, it really has to be pretty ridiculous to even a standard run of the mill half decent home built let alone an enthusiast.

At 1.38 you are pushing your voltage there too... I wouldn't go any higher for long periods of time.

well I'm not pushing anything yet - I got my CPU today ( Batch 3050A421). I'm getting UD7 tomorrow, and ram will be arriving around friday. Trying to order cooler around tomorrow so that I'll be able to have fun hopefully during this weekend, and if not then asap next week.

Update : just ordered Noctua Dh-14. Now I'm being tempted at shellshocker CL8 2x4gb 1600 Gskill ram at newegg.... Is there any point of getting it instead of Cl9 ? ( got CL9 version for 10$ cheaper)

I remember seeing a chart somewhere that explained each level you drop the CL on RAM is equivalent to bumping it up 1 level in memory bandwidth from a performance standpoint. In other words getting CL8 DDR3-1600 is equivalent to about CL9 DDR3-1866. If you already have CL9 DDR3-1600 there's no point in upgrading, but if you were planning on getting new RAM that G.Skill set that was on sale is a GREAT buy.

Do you have proof of concept? This is the first I heard of heat even being somewhat of an issue under 5ghz.

LOL. I couldn't stress test beyond 4.3ghz on the stock cooler with better thermal paste installed. Temps jumped into the mid 80's quick. This is true on 4 different 2600k's and a 2500k.

OMFG what is THAT : http://www.chiphell.com/forum-viewthread-tid-164288-from-portal.html

0_0 This is massive....Sythe Susano... do you get a pair of Uchiha eyes with it ? does it come with free 9 tails ( well 4 real tails and 4 through HT... ) colar ? Do you have to buy two of them, and then let them battle so that one can achieve the mastery of the secret techniques ?

And the price is almost the same ( 95$) as on other high-end air coolers. Any reviews on that one?

Waiting on memory now. Newegg sure take it's time when it comes to shipping...amazon ftw >_>.

Got my memory today. So hopefuly, unless world will start falling apart, I will start on my new build tonight, and share my temps results in couple of days :D.
