Hey guys! I´ve been having this rattling noise in one of my gpu (r9 380x) fans for months and now I finally want to fix it. I watched some videos on how to clean it and I learned that I need thermal paste but I only have the one which came with my hyper 212. I wanted to know if I could use that one as I´m not looking for the best temperatures, i just want to fix the noise.

If you can remove the shroud and replace the fan, that should fix the rattle.
It may be as simple as finding one has come loose and tightening it.

I know, I want to see if there is any loose screw or anything strange and correct me if im wrong (i never cleaned my gpu, only cpu) but I will need thermal paste to put the heatsink back. If you have any suggestions on how to approach this I´d really appreciate it!

The rattling is more then likely caused by a bearing in the fan going bad. It might stop for a bit but it will come back or be on and off.

Try this... While you have your pc on and a game loaded up lightly press your finger in the center of the fan enough to slow it down but not stop it completely. Then release it and see if it starts rattling after a few seconds or minutes.

If it does then its the bearing. One of my 6970s used to do the same thing.

If the card is still under warranty then RMA it if you dont know how to change the fan

+1

if this is the cause, you might be able to use some 3-1 oil to stop it for a while, but id just get a new fan/shroud.

Okay I will try that before disassembling the gpu to see if anything changes. I live in Argentina and I bought this card a year ago in USA so RMA is out of the question, getting a replacement fan is gonna be difficult for the same reason.

If it's genuinely difficult for you to get replacement parts do as was mentioned and hold down the fan to see if the rattling stops, there are a multitude of options you can go with depending on the outcome of that test. There are aftermarket coolers/shrouds, and there's always the option I posted earlier for repairing the fan or lubricating it.

Which specific model is it? as the fan type/configuration dictates the method of which the issue is approached.

This is the one I bought: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017WMD1VI/?tag=tec06d-20. As for the test, yes, the rattling seemed to stop as the fan slowed down while I pressed it. I am not entirely sure if things sent by ebay would reach me nowadays (this things change a lot here and there used to be many complications with items being stolen etc). What should I do now?

Sometimes the fan/shroud us very hard to dismantle.

I had a lot of trouble doing this with my 6970 and in the end ended up getting an aftermarket cooler to replace both coolers entirely.

Try contacting the card manufacturer and ask them if they are willing to send you out a fan assembly despite not being in the USA. you never know if they will oblige you

That model is very easy to disassemble. You shouldn't have any issue just take your time don't force anything and keep track of all the screws as well as the thermal pads on the PCB.

Have you tested if pushing down on the fan stops the sound?

Also it's a bit disheartening but I found this, atleast its not just yours

thats a Good thing. it means it can be fixed with a little problem solving , and trouble shooting.most likely.

Also i found this...

http://www.gigabyte.com/Support/Warranty

their warranty page Has an Argentina option FWIW, you may yet be able to get support for the issue through their RMA service...sadly i cannot read the page once it is changed to Argentina

I might be able to do that :p, that warranty only works specifically for motherboards bought here as that is the only product Gibabyte officially sells in Argentina. I will try to contact them explaining the whole situation to see if they can do anything but from what I read from the post you linked on reddit I am not expecting much.

yeah, but as you said its worth a shot, and if they are willign to deal with motherboards in Argentina, id hope they would be just as willign to handle a GPU occasionally. if they wont help You, Go @ amazon, and request a refund/return. The item is faulty, and you need it replaced. if You were close to me , i could fix it in a snap, im sure of it, as ive been doing it for years...the hardest ones imo, are Blower cards, you have options, but i always just drilled a hole in the top of the Blower fan, and drop a few drops of 3in1 oil down into it, which would resolve 90% of Rattles in the Fan ;), then seal it up with hot glue. professional

don't forget to get yourself an anti-static strap (assuming you don't have one already )

and a tip i learnt, was to let the card or what ever you are dismantling that has old paste on warm up, to me it seems easier to remove heat sinks when they aren't cold

(waits for others to say that's rubbish :p )

as for rattling fans, i have in the past added proper ball bearings instead of the rubbish sleeve bearings that seem to be used in everything these days,
the problem for you might be acquiring them and removing the old one

Just touch a grounded radiator or a metal sink/faucet in your home to discharge first before handling computer hardware.

I bought the card a year ago so I dont think i can ask for a refund/return but I already contacted Gigabyte to see if they can do anything anyways.

I decided to lubricate the fan with oil but I dont know where to get that 3-1 oil everyone talks about, would motorcycle oil do the trick? I may also end up buying a replacement from ebay if they can ship it here, could you point me to the one I need? Thanks.

PS: Sorry if my english isnt that good, it´s been ages since the last time I needed to ask for help.

hm seems i didn't answer your thoughts on paste
well i wouldn't use anything with bits in like diamond unless it was for a cpu with a cover on the top
but your paste should be ok

I totally agree, you should also get yourself a tinfoil hat too:shadedshu::kookoo::laugh:
it's easy to damage things with static and although the result may not seem much it's always best to be safe than sorry
a tin foil hat would act as a conductor and if rubbed on the hair create static electricity

3in1 oil is just Electrical component/motor oil (for electrical motors) , any oil in Your country that is intended for that purpose will suffice. Im certain there is a similar counterpart. just look for "Electrical component oil" or something like that

it's easy to damage things with static and although the result may not seem much it's always best to be safe than sorry
a tin foil hat would act as a conductor and if rubbed on the hair create static electricity

im not feeding into the BS culture of wrist straps for ESD in private home use. all i can say is this. it might effect certain people in certain situations, but by and large, IMO it is not a true danger. is it a possibility? Yes ofc, but in 30 years ive never damaged a component from ESD(by definition that removes your use of the word "EASY" maybe you meant likely for people who arent sensible?), (now that doesnt mean it isnt real, just not likely) & if we are going to protect ourselves with counter measures from what May "possibly happen" . well then we better start out carrying Parachutes, Fire extinguishers, tents, emergency food, Etc, and on and on.....I only concern myself with things that actually might happen, ESD is not one of them, not to mention if you Are in a area where the conditions are right for it, its so simple to ground yourself, a person doesnt need a strap....keeping in mind, my entire home aside from Bathroom, and kitchen are carpet....Still NO ESD. if it is a concern to someone, to the point where they feel in danger, let them waste their money....i wasnt born last night though. to each his own.

to sum what my rant says up:
im not saying it isnt real, im just saying IME, it isnt likely.
