Exceeding P2B-D MB MFR's Memory?

Hello,

I have an ASUS P2B-D MB w/2 P-II processors which is limited per the manual to 4 3.3Volt 168-pin DIMMS with (at the time it was written) a total max of 1GB (4 256MB DIMMS). My question is can I exceed that? There are DIMMS available now that are 1GB 168-pin 3.3 volt unbuffered SDRAM hence I am curious if I can exceed the manufacturers limits (at that time) by replacing the 256MB existing DIMMS with 1GB DIMMS providing the other specs are the same (168-pin 3.3 volt unbuffered SDRAM).

This workstation I use with Debian Linux and it is a great machine to spend time on hence my desire to exceed the published memory specs if possible.

Any thoughts will be most appreciated and thanks in advance...

Get the latest bios and then try a 1GB pc100 or pc66 module, as long as its not greater than pc100 you should be fine unless if there are memory tuning features in that board. the chipset could be a limiting factor...

Thank you, I overlooked mentioning the PC-100 compliant DIMM requirement. If a 1GB PC 100 module works can I assume that I can then add 3 more? Any other thoughts will be most appreciated...

The 440BX chipset only supports up to 1GB of RAM, and you should be glad it does since a lot of other Intel chipsets around that time were limited to 512MB or less, including my nice Pentium III-S 1.4GHz and Intel D815EFV rig I have right now. I did acquire a P2B-F years ago and I'm fairly sure it didn't support larger than 256MB modules, I inserted a 512MB module and it only saw half of the capacity. When chipsets say they have a maximum memory limit, they mean it. 1GB is great for a chipset from 1998.

1GB is pretty much the limit you might be able to get 1200 but the chip-set isn't capable of addressing much more then that
honestly the system is to old to be of any use for anything other then the most basic of tasks more ram isn't gonna help that woefully inadequate cpu or system bus or any of the other bottle necks in a system of that `vintage` not when a used socket 775 system can be had for 75 to 100 bucks

According to Intel's spec sheet, 1GB requires RDIMMs to work on this chipset.

With 1 gb of ram that board will run win 7
