I watched some more videos and don't understand why the beginning looks so 1950, when it's taking place in 2077? Sure people won't be living in Matrix 50 years from now, but seriously, the clothing, music and other stuff just doesn't make any sense at all in the game. It did in Fallout 1, but here?

stop being such an octopussy and just enjoy the damn game will ya? :p

Perhaps a smart guy like you has seen everything under the sun already and nothing could possibly surprise you. I mean all of the other Fallouts have been so original before this one. Not like the first two boil down to your community slowly dying and you're the only one that can save them? Then in 3 you have to track down your long lost/deadbeat dad, that's never been done before right? Oh then in New Vegas you have to avenge yourself from the guy that almost murdered you, that's definitely never ever been done before! :D The Elder Scrolls series is even worse. I mean with the player always being a prisoner. Unoriginal Bethesda bastards! Somebody should tell them how much they suck.
...

Maybe you should try active aggression, rather than this passive aggressive stuff.

In Fallout 3 you begin with, quite literally, your birth. After you've done character creation via organically chosen interactions (do you remember the GOAT?) you leave the vault and enter a rather standard story line of chasing your father. Thing is, the introduction doesn't give a crap about getting you started or an overarching story, it just says "welcome to our world, it's yours now."

As far as New Vegas, the opening was a bit cliche. It follows the amnesia tropes, but getting shot isn't the opening. The opening is interacting with the doctor to set your SPECIAL, wandering around a town, getting into an easy mode bit of combat to introduce you to the systems, and being able to kill something which genuinely poses a challenge (and therefore gives a sense of accomplishment). Getting a second life is cliche, but the mechanical introduction was genuinely good and didn't rely on any tropes once you could actually play the game.

I never argued Elder Scrolls. They are the exact same beginning for every game. Prisoner, accused of an unspecified crime, get saved by deus ex machina, and adventure begins.

The reason this particular introduction was galling is that it has the death of your loved one immediately as a motivation. It frames actions against another loved one as a means of core motivation. It doesn't even have a particularly good introduction to the mechanics, as you enter a standard character creation shuffle like that of 3, without being invested in anything before being shuffled off to the vault. I cared about the people in 3 because we could talk. I don't care about 4 because we're told that we love a cardboard cut-out. Sorry, but I care more about the Raiders than a character that is used as motivation that I'm told to care about. Tell me, other than their gender, and that they love their child, what do you know about your spouse? If you can't give me a dozen things, then the character wasn't a character, and thus wasn't worthy of being a motivation.

You argue that I'm jaded and believe Fallout 4 should have had a completely fresh opening; I argue that this is impossible. I just want Bethesda to make me care about characters that should be our primary motivation. If you spent anything more than a token few minutes with your loved ones they might be that. Unfortunately, Bethesda dropped the ball here, so we get a trope. I'm angry that after years of time for them to develop we get an opening worse than that of 3. Way to start off by shooting yourself in the foot Bethesda.

This. Exactly.

After all, this is an open world with a strong story driven aspect single player game. The kick off has got to get you pumped for what is about to come. If you do not have time to give your players reason to care about the PCs family, why even consider it as a starting point? At this point, just start it off in the cryo-chamber with no recollection and have the player put the pieces together... I feel as though the beginning was just a weak excuse to show a nuke going off thinking that would be enough to leave a lasting impression that this was an awesome beginning...

Haven't had that issue at all personally. I would recommend trying beta drivers if there are any for AMD, then running the game on potato settings and moving them up once you get it working.

Saving's working now. I had to run Steam as administrator as well.

(Am I the only Win 10 user with these administrator bs?)

Anybody already know if 9-10 in intelligence worth it?
what about Charisma? is it 'useless' like in FO3 or often found as speech checks like in NV?

I know there is a sentence with a point in there, but I'm failing to see it.
No point, just a joke. I was impatient having to wait for update. :D

Lol...

Fallout prologue begins in 1957 (?) with a nuclear strike on America. Prior to attack, many survivors had already bought living space in Vaultec Fallout Shelters, known as Vaults.

After the strike these shelters are automatically locked down due 2 the radiation threat.

In 2077, 200 years later, all Vaults across the country are finally opened for the first time. Vault Dwellers step out into a strange, unfamiliar land.....and so your story begins. :p

That's more like the original Fallout. Also ~1957+200 does not equal give or take 2077. Also the technology presented in the prologue doesn't look very much like mid 20th century (I know it's a bloody game, but stil..).
I am just not sure what to make of this.

Don't want to ruffle feathers but I don't expect miracles from games. I expect an experience that keeps me interested. The beginning is moot to me as it's an irrelevance. The open world RPG is generally about exploration and quest fulfillment and only Witcher 3 has grabbed me by the emotional nuts. Fall Out 4 is a bog standard franchise of bomb, bang explore. and all I seek is entertaining distraction and immersion. I'm quite happy I wasn't given time to completely bond with my in game missus as I hate being depressed. As it is, I have a task ahead of me and that's that.

As for running it, 2560x1440p, everything on ultra and no issues. Latest Nv drivers. Interior textures very Fallout ish and not exactly state of the art but I didn't play it to look at walls.

Fallout isn't following real world history and technology since 1945. That's why you see household robot and tilt rotor copter but 1950 era cars.

The former world that you always run into pieces of has always been a futuristic world that was commonly seen and imagined by the population of the 50's.

That is why the "old world" on Fallout games always looks like futuristic 50's. It's how They saw things.

Which AA setting are you using? FXAA no problems, the other one (TLAA?) is very hungry for GPU.

Maybe I missed, but it seems all the people with no issues are not running Win 10! :)

At this point I'm wondering if my graphics card is too weak for this game.
I've been having a lot of crashing issues. Basically I never went beyond character creation because the game would crash. Installing the latest Nvidia driver and Fallout 4's beta patch made no difference. The only way I solved this was to forget about my monitor's native resolution of 2560x1440 and play at 1600x900. This way I played for hours, without a single crash!
I thought it would be less taxing on the graphics card if I played at 2560x1440 with no AA rather than at 1600x900 with full AA, but seems I was proved wrong.
I also thought my graphics card was future proof (especially with 4GB of Vram)... but it seems I was wrong here too!

Crashing how? You may not have enough RAM.

Do you have a pagefile?

I do not in fact, since the min req for the game is 8gb and I have only 6gb. I thought graphic quality was more dependent on vram not ram?

It crashes in that the game sounds stop, I get a black screen and my monitor goes on standby.

The game runs perfectly fine with no crashes at all if I run it at 1600x900 with full AA instead of 2560x1440 and no AA.

Probably. :) I have my PC logged in locally with an Admin account. Always hate logging into MS just to access my PC.

EDIT: Crashing for me only started when I forced SLI to AFR2 in the nVidia Control Panel. Otherwise the game was rock solid stable for me on a single card. Though I did have some subtitle syncing issues when I got to Commonwealth and spoke with the main NPC there.

Sort of but there's a bit more to it. DX11 games use a lot of RAM.....also resource use varies with OS version.
RAM is allocated for VRAM caching in DX11.2, as pagefile for the video card. Really 12-16GB is needed with 4GB GPU...and no pagefile.

Is this the first DX11 game you've had crash?

2560x1440 I'd guess that's eating 3GB of VRAM alone, prob caching another 3GB in memory.
Crysis, Far Cry, BF4...GTAV...they all eat 16GB....

Try a 4GB pagefile and see what happens.
I only have 2GB GPU, 8GB RAM. 6GB used in fallout...life on the edge. :p

Only 2GB of VRam at 2560x1440p ultra. At least that's what Precision X is saying for me.

Probably. :) I have my PC logged in locally with an Admin account. Always hate logging into MS just to access my PC.

I also have my pc logged in locally with an admin account. Unless I'm missing something and having a really blond moment?

Jeez, it's buggy as fuck......

out of sync dialogue, echo (or 2nd voice speaking over dialogue), interface issues with my first terminal hack.......

And I admit it - some textures are awful.........

I will enjoy the game but it's lack of finesse is quite disturbing for AAA.

@lilhasselhoffer was right. Unfortunately.
