i agree love my gigabyte boards i have 2 rigs with them but the i7 920 is 1366 and the p55 is 1156 p.s on micro center website i cannot find the i7 920 chip anywhere

you have to input a store location before you can actually see chip inventory.

would the 1156 series chipset be better due to the price of board and ram on the i7 920 ?

for overall cost, yes. You'll save about $100-200 because of the cheaper motherboards, but ram is expensive in dual channel kits. BTW... I saw you speaking earlier about quad-channel... that doesn't exist. It's just dual channel and triple channel. Even if you have 4 sticks it'd still be dual channel, you'd have lower OC headroom, but you would have more memory total.

thanks for clearing that up

the i7920 is 1366 socket not 1156, but nvm im reading this completely wrong, what ram voltage is safe on an i7920 1.6?

this will make more sense if you owned one, but safe MAX voltage for ram is your QPI voltage +.5V. Stock QPI is 1.15V and if you overclock it'll be anywhere from 1.2-1.4 which is headroom of 1.7-1.9V

You will have to OC if you buy fast ram, as your stock ram multipliers will keep the memory speed low. If you have the cooling to do it you most likely will OC a little bit. Some people can achieve 3.4-4.0GHz overclocks with stock voltages.

I'd still say get a second hand WC set up rather then that case, costs the same and you'll have MUCH better temps from water then a case upgrade.

i agree with the temps and performance of WC but im not familiar with WC and etc plus the case i have no doesnt have too much room in it. maybe WC can come further down the road.

You want triple channel for 1366, not dual channel. It would be safe to use, but not optimal.

also would that ram be safe?

::EDIT:: I'd also use some scratch to get a better cooler, but that cooler will hold you fine at 3.4-3.8GHz.

Ahh that's fair enough : ]

I just got my first loop the other day, I was a little scared at first but after I had it all sitting infront of me it was easy to set up.

Just be sure if/when you go WC to test it all with all your bits and bobs out the case, to avoid any accidents!

cheap but quality ram is most of the time better to get than expensive ram when you only plan to use speeds up to 1600MHz

Those ballistix you posted are a good set too, stylish :D

Here's another option for a CPU cooler, and you may find it elsewhere for cheaper.

and I really do love my true rev C
