Well Friday (Oct 31) will be the big day ... I'll be cleaning out my P180 case and installing the pile of new components sitting on the workbench (listed in my System Specs) and I should be ready for startup by noon. What follows is what I think is the most logical way to proceed, provided I don't have any hardware problems:

  • Flash new BIOS for Q9550 (SLB8V-E0) support.
  • Install Vista x64 OS & activate.
  • Install ATI video card drivers & software.
  • Complete system backup.
  • Install antivirus/Internet security suite (Kaspersky).
  • Configure, configure, configure (ad nauseam).
  • Complete system backup II.
  • Test system (Ram, CPU, GPU, etc).
  • Install applications.
  • Configure some more. :shadedshu.
  • Complete system backup III.

So am I missing anything? Is there anything wrong with the order of these operations?

About the only thing which really concerns me is the BIOS flash. The as-built BIOS on the mobo apparently doesn't support the SLB8V (E0) version of the Q9550 but I'm hoping that the system will still have enough basic operation to POST and get into the BIOS setup screens so I can flash the new BIOS from either a CD or flash drive. Is this correct?

I'm also assuming that the video card will work in a generic mode until I install the drivers. Is this also correct?

Unfortunately, my laptop is currently out of commission so I won't be able to go online and ask questions until the new system is up-and-running, so I'm trying to ask my questions before I gut the old one. If push comes to shove, I'll buy a cheap case and put the old guts in it so I can get back online, but I'd rather not have to.

Thanks ahead of time!

Pete

your order seems about right to me

i dont think the board will boot at all if it doesnt support the cpu (not completely sure tho)

i have 2 of those graphics cards and they work fine before you install the drivers. i find that my computer gos extremely slow until i install the graphics drivers, it does go though so it should be fine

I want to agree with him. Although I have never had to deal with this myself, I've read on these forums several times about needing a older CPU(65nm) to use to flash bios for support of a new CPU(45nm). I'm about 90% positive on this.

I'm not sure whether this helps me or not, but the as-built BIOS on the mobo does support the Q9550 SLAWQ (C1). The Q9550 SLB8V (E0) I have is just the latest version of the same chip.

I would change it slightly....

  • Flash new BIOS for Q9550 (SLB8V-E0) support.
  • Install Vista x64 OS & activate. (also SP1 for vista, if you can slipstream it into the install disc you will save time, google vlite.)
  • Install motherboard software.
  • Install antivirus/Internet security suite (Kaspersky).
  • Install updates from Microsoft.
  • Install ATI Driver (not microsofts one)
  • Complete system backup.
  • Configure, configure, configure (ad nauseam).
  • Complete system backup II.
  • Test system (Ram, CPU, GPU, etc).
  • Install applications.
  • Check for more updates.
  • Configure some more. :shadedshu.
  • Complete system backup III.

Oh that! Good catch!

I like the fan, because it looks like the turbine on a jet, and jets are fast.
Yeah, they're fast, but bug-suckers are loud and they smell bad. :D

This order sounds better to me as well.

As for the CPU support, it couldn't hurt to call the manufacturer.

Latest Poop on the BIOS Issue:

Ok, what follows is about the ASUS P5E64 WS Evolution mobo which is what I'm using. Whether it applies to any other boards is unknown:

My board is Revision 2.00 G. According to a couple of folks who have posted in the ASUSTeK forums, this revision comes pre-loaded with the 0506 BIOS and the ASUS BIOS Revision History says the 0506 BIOS will run the Q9550 (SLB8V-E0) CPU.

In addition, one of the gurus in that forum says the board will POST with an unsupported CPU installed, but give a warning after POST. It's also allegedly possible to get into the BIOS Setup screens with an unsupported CPU installed and from there, use the ASUS EZ Flash 2 tool to upgrade the BIOS from a USB flash drive.

This sounds good! Whether it will all pan out this way remains to be seen, though. If it does, I should be able to report back from the new system this weekend.

Pete
