FreeNAS or a regular NAS?

I'm trying to expand my storage since my 1TB is filling up and I was just wondering do a FreeNAS build with an old pc or get a NAS? I heard that regular NAS are slow and I don't know if FreeNAS is slow or not.

Well FreeNAS is only as fast as the PC you install it on.

We use FreeNAS for backup in our VMware enviroment. The PC´s we use are DIY builds with RAID controllers and a lot of disks.
The main things are:
- Use the 64 bit FreeNAS builds (right now v. 9.1.1 or 9.2.0 Release Candidate)
- Use a CPU with minimum 2 cores
- Use at least 8 GB of memory
- Use the build in ZFS filesystem

You dont have to use a RAID controller as FreeNAS can make it via software, assuming you will use more than one hdd.
