Microsoft's spiritual and temporal ruler King William Gates the III has announced that he will abdicate his throne in July 2008.

Gates says that he wants to work full time at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a charity organisation he founded with his wife, which focuses on global health and education.

"I have the responsibility to give back to society and make sure those resources are given back in the best possible way, to those in need. It's not a retirement; it's a reordering of my priorities." Gates said.

I don't get why some people have such a bad opinion about him. He is not the only person responsible for the Windows that we use every day and that we have to deal with. I think its great that he wants to really see where his money goes to and I can completely understand that...imagine you donate millions of dollars then you wont write a simple check saying "Well here you go do what you find best". Btw: Ever heard of some oil sheik donating any money and not spending it for their 20th Ferrari??

Last I heard was that Ray Ozzie will become the new Microsoft chief software architect, while Craig Mundie will become the new chief research and strategy officer.

What irony...

Gates and Microsoft generate windfall profits from criminal activity, then try to show what a good neighbor they are by donating money they have stolen from CONSUMERS, to charity. This ain't Bill's money, it's money he has stolen from consumers from selling defective products such as Windows, Internet Explorer, etc. without prior disclosure of the known defects. Even though Microsoft has been convicted multiple times for violation of law, they have shown that crime pays BIG TIME and that PACT money can protect you from prosecution. The judical system in America simply does not work when it can be bought by sleaze like Gates and Microsoft.

Good for him, most people would not have continued working once they broke the $1 Million mark, yet alone the $90 Billion mark. They especially wouldn't start an entire charity foundation and set it up so that when he passes away all his money is donated to charity.

In all honesty, windows is the absolute greatest thing to happen to the PC since the integrated circuit. Without windows, there would be absolutely nothing to coerce hardware manufacturers into following any form of standards and software would never have come close to its wide compatibility range of today. Everyone would be forced to run custom setup UNIX (or UNIX-based) operating systems, carefully configured precisely for their machine and nobody else's. Without windows, companies like Dell wouldn't have worked, and the majority of people still wouldn't have computers, while the internet could plausibly still be a tinkering of DARPA's.

Without Windows, we'd be lost in an abyss of incompatible hardware and software with no structure to anything.

Well..

XooM has the right mindset about this for the most part.

True, Bill is rich because of inflated software prices that “rob” us of our money... but we gave him that money because Windows is simply a "Must Have".

In fact, cost and poor security are the only complaints have with Windows. With that aside it has always been a fantastic, though in the past unstable, product. We can’t really complain too much.

Even cost isn't really an issue. A windows XP Pro license can be had for under $100 these days, and Microsoft has said that they will be charging roughly the same for the home edition of Vista as they do for MCE now. So price isn't really that big of a deal.

What gets me is people that pay $200+ for a graphics card, and $200+ for a processor without even a peep, and both be outdated in a year. However, they will bitch constantly about the $100 they have to shell out for Windows, and it lasts far longer. XP has been with use for 5 years. So that means the people that paid the $200 when it first came out(that is what I paid for it the day it was released) are still able to use it to its fullest 5 years later, and if you go buy the top of the line Windows off the shelf today it will the same thing you got 5 years ago. I can't think of any other part of a computer that is that important and lasts that long(ok well maybe the case).

I've heard enough about Conroe and AM2.. anyone who upgrades from 939 to Conroe just wants benchmarks, and anyone going from 939 to AM2 might be retarded. *edited to clarify thoughts*

Actually I am upgrading from 939 to Conroe and I could care less about benchmarks. I want a dual core because I do a lot multi-tasking and it will be cheaper to get a 2.4GHz Conroe and a 775 board then it would be to get the same(performance wise) if I just upgrade my processor and stick with 939.

XooM - I am w/ ya, 110% agreement!

IBM's Os/2 2.0 - Warp 4.0 were the closest competition though to date imo, but also, imo?

Today, we should all have been running SOME form of UNIX - but, you "Linux & UNIX nuts" can thank AT&T, Berkeley, SCO, & other unix variants for that screwup!

They should have stuck together on ALL fronts imo, instead of stupidly competing... apk

To those discussiong upgrading to conroe: not everything is about benchmarks or gaming performance... some of us are really dedicated to crunching, whether it be for distributed computing or our own work (ie renderfarms). I know many many many people looking to upgrade to conroe for the significant speed boost it will provide to all of the above.

So stop being over-generalizing and ignorant.

You're right, it is in no way a major strain on the old wallet. Some people just have trouble justifying $100-$200 on software that can't be legally used on more than one PC.

However that doesn't stop some people from installing it on more than one... :D
