I bought this game during the Autumn Sale and I really like it. It's the spiritual successor to Populous and Black & White. There are no creatures but I get the impression that your civilization will eventually be self-administrating and will do so according to how you managed it throughout its development (similar to the creatures in Black & White 1 & 2). There's also battles like Populous but so far, they are relegated to 20 battle maps with three play modes: largest population, most gems, or destroy enemy. Most of the game revolves around terrain manipulation and city building. Unlike Black & White and Populous though, there's no micromanagement in placing buildings: it is automatic and whether to build or not is determined by if there's someone available to build it.

Peter Molyneux, co-founder of Bullfrog Productions which created Populous and co-founder of Lionhead Studios which created Fable and Black & White, is behind 22 Cans which is developing Godus.

I really liked populus, but if i remember Molyneux was behind this, so I flat out refused to give them my monies.
Is it really that good? I keep cockteasing myself by watching videos of it, and then slap my wrists and turn away.

Molyneux made Populous and he says Godus is Populous reimagined.

I watched the Giant Bomb "Quick Look" video of it and thought "meh" but I bought it anyway when it was on sale. I put almost 30 hours into it and reached the point where they are in development (end of Bronze Age). It says the game is only 41% done and the final product will go all the way to the space age.

Molyneux has a tendency to promise things he can't deliver on, he's pretty famous in that regard on the internet.
I might buy it during the Christmas Steam sale then, starts on the 19th!

Oh gods I remember when B&W was being made. Probably the most hype I've seen surrounding a game.

Speaking of gods btw, I have always wondered why someone (this dude probably because it's his thing) has made a game based on Small Gods by Terry Pratchett. The concept of Small Gods anyway, how gods are being made. They are ... small gods being blown about, there are millions of them, they can only affect very small things. Like a shepherd dreaming of how to find his lost sheep or something. The shepherd starts to believe in something, the god comes to life and battles with the other gods for supremacy, be it through actual battles, underground converting, mass dreams or whatever. Most believers win.

This looks nice, might look it up when it's released.
