I just finished my PC today, and was able to boot up and log in just fine. I tried to install the display drivers, but was left waiting around two and a half hours on a black screen so I restarted the PC. Now whenever I boot up, it goes straight to a black screen after the enter bios option. I tried removing the graphics cards but I can't boot up with my integrated CPU as my motherboard does not have a port for video output. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Thanks.

EDIT: I should note that I get a POST code of 21 after windows tries to boot and I get a black screen

Whatever error codes are receiving you need to go onto your motherboards manufacturers website into the support section and look up that code. And you're one step closer to figuring out what the problem is. I personally would try to either run a different GPU or if that's not possible try it in a different PCI slot, also verify that in your bios you have set primary graphics to PCI.

This is were w 8 and 10 stopped using safe mode. That would be helpful

Might be set to the wrong monitor, wrong resolution or just a bad install

How would I check what monitor/resolution it is set to? I'm running 2 1080's in SLI and my main monitor, which I was using, is a BenQ 2430

What psu have you got? Try installing drivers with only one gpu installed and only one (your main) monitor plugged into it.

I have an EVGA 850 Gold 80 plus PSU. I would try that but unfortunately I can't really remove one GPI without disassembling my water cooling :(

You may well have to if that's the case :( you don't have multiple monitors plugged into your 1080's do you? is this a build you put together yourself including the WC setup etc and not a shop bought?

It sounds like the driver install messed up (I know stating the obivous :)). There are a number of options

1. If you setup a recovery drive try that and it should use the basic standard drivers and from there you can reset or reinstall drivers
2, If this is a new machine with nothing on it then just reinstalling windows is an option

It may also make sense to get a Linux USB boot device to ensure that the machine is booting ok and that nothing else is wrong and causing issues.

Do also try all the ports on the video cards that you can connect a monitor to in case it is displaying it graphics on a different port. This includes all HDMI ports as well. I remember having some fun on the ports when setting up my own machine initially

It's one I put together myself, and yeah I do have multiple monitors attached to the first 1080, but when I installed the drivers I made sure it was only my main monitor at 1080p.

I have reinstalled windows 3 or 4 times. On the last try I was finally able to install the drivers, but after rebooting could I am still getting a black screen following the windows loading screen. maybe 2/10 times I will alternatively get an error "windows failed to start correctly" or something like that.

Interesting, if you have reinstalled windows a few times then we know its some incompatibility with the GPU cards when correct drivers are added.

It could be motherboard issues with 2 newer GPU cards. Are you on the latest motherboard bios? Make sure you are there may be an update available.

Also it may be possible on your motherboard bios to disable a PCI slot which would mean you could test the setup without SLI. Not sure if this is possible on MSI I have a similar motherboard but would need to reboot to be sure :).

The SLI needs to be eliminate as a potential issue. I wonder could you unseat it without having to dismantle the whole water cooling? Be careful with this option. Its possible that removing the power from one card may also make it inoperable and not boot but you would have to just try that and see what happens.

Then try the whole reinstall windows thing after every option above!

Building machines is such fun :)

Thanks :) I ended up getting it sorted. I connected only one monitor, set it to 1080P and removed the SLI bridge and it worked after a windows reinstall.

Great, however do you now have a spare 1080? I can take it off your hands if you want :).

If you removed the SLI bridge is SLI working via PCI express? Did not think that worked with 1080's.

I suppose the question is where are you now with the build? Are you running with a single GPU?

Was contemplating picking up a 1080 or 2 so I have a little vested interest on your progress :)
