If both were DX10 it would be hard to choose. But like the this stand I`m voting for 5770.

Performance, with both being OC'ed from the factory, they will be about the same. Any difference would only pop up in benchmarking and would be so little it doesn't matter.

Now in a realistic world the GTX 260 55nm is still a generation old now. It will be replaced by a Nvidia GTX 400 card very soon. Get the ATI HD 5770 because it is up-to-date tech with full DX11 support and cheaper.

the only advantage the 5770 has over the GTX 260 is the fact that it is a dx11 card. The 128 bit bus on the 5770 is another matter.

128 bit bus doesn't matter at all.

It seems a GTX 260 sp216 just offers the edge in gaming about 10% more, though is it really worth the extra forty dollars?

    GTX260 -> faster in DX9 and older DX10 games
HD5770 -> compatible with DX11, faster in newer engines

If you are using 1680x1050 resolution the 5770 is on average 8% better. The GTX 260 is definitely not worth the higher price, especially since it's an older card.

I just woke up a managed to look at some newer reviews with 10.3 Cat installed and it seems with it the 5770 beats the Gtx 260! So it seems a 5770 is more powerful than a GTX 260 sp216

Get the WAYYY newer card. This mean the HD5770.

Consume less power, is egal or even better VS a GTX260 and support DX11.

The GTX260 makes no sense to me today. It was 1 year ago ...

that GTX260 is WAY overpriced, $243? BOO.
Stick with the HD5770, DX11, cooler and more power efficient.
Besides, its $40 cheaper with identical performance.

Will one 5770 perform better than my 8800 ultra's in SLi? Or I'd need to xfire for the 5770 to be more powerful? Would it be worth it for Tri SLi with my ultra's?

I cannot be certain, but I am going to go with a negative. A single GPU that cost less than $300 will not out perform 2 8800 Ultras.

The fact that you have a setup with 2 8800 Ultra brings in some more issues. Neither of the 2 cards you are considering will be an increase in performance compared to what you have now. That being the case you should be considering either an ATI 5850 or an Nvidia 470. The 5850 is a better overall value between those two, but the Nvidia 470 will give you SLI as an upgrade option later.

Alternatively, you can just wait a few weeks for the 450 and 460 which should be in the Upper $100 and Mid $200 range respectively. And you can afford to wait, because there is no real need to upgrade.

Now that I have looked at your sig, you decided on a 5850 before, stick with your gut decision on that one. There is other stuff you can and should upgrade as well if you have some money now to burn.
