What resolution are you gaming at? In the price range you can get:

PowerColor AX6950 2GBD5-2DH Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256... -$230 with rebate for a 2gb 6950. Awesome deal.

That's if you actually need 2gb vram. There are cheaper 1gb 6950's as well. Or you could go with a GTX 560 if you like using Nvidia.

Yeah going from the planned HD6950 to a GTX550ti will be a huge disappointment. I agree with BO$$ the GTX550 isn't powerful enough to max out high res textures and actually use 2GB of vRAM. The card is probably no faster than the 1GB version in most games and only a few FPS faster in others. Still way slower than even a 1GB HD6850, HD6870 or GTX560. I say get either of those or whatever you can find cheapest. GTX550 is kinda going too slow for what you want. Heck that card shouldn't even be called a GTX IMHO it's not nearly high end enough to get the GTX name. GTS550 is more like it!

If you're on a crossfire board then my vote would be to get an 6850 and add another one down the road, they scale very very well. Else a GTX 560 or an HD 6870 should be enough :)
