You are very right about that 960. It's the worst mid ranger in a few generations of Nvidia cards. Low resale value, VRAM bottleneck (just like 660ti, just watch this same series of benches with newer titles in two years and it will suffer the same fate, falling off considerably, and the 670 will increase its lead further) and similarly priced (if you can still find one) to a GTX 770 which is essentially a 680 on steroids. There is just no real sweet spot anywhere with the 960. And that's just looking at Nvidia offerings exclusively, never mind the much stronger AMD alternatives both at, and slightly above the price point.

Power consumption... that argument always makes me laugh. It's a non issue, and even if it IS an issue, we are talking about an actual difference of maybe 3-5 eur/dollar per year with really intense gaming - like 4+ hours per day. In which case any card at this price point is a bad purchase imo, because with that time investment you really gotta look at 104 silicon even if just for resale value.

Seems like we were in the same boat :) I ran 2x GTX 660 and even that combo had a VRAM bottleneck in SLI. The GK106 is crippled by its asymmetrical memory subsystem, it has the very familiar 1.5+0.5GB segmentation going on, just like GTX 970...

I swapped my 2x 660's for one 770 and while theoretically it would be 'similar', the 770 delivered a much smoother experience across the board. After that I knew I was never going to buy into asymmetrical memory again. And that's when 970 released, and I went towards 780ti second hand as an upgrade :) No regrets, and when I counted total expenses of this whole ordeal, I was still coming out cheaper than buying the single 780ti at launch :D

About GTX 970 memory you are right. The very low memory bandwidth on the last 0,5 GB ram does effect some games but not all. GTA V is one of them where i can feel when the game hits above 3,5 GB vram. It becomes much more lag on lag. Beside that its great card. Low power use compared to its performence and older cards and oc very well. The vram lag where much whorse on my GTX 660 TI cards.

If the GTX 980 Ti had been release at the time i got my two GTX 970 i would had chosen GTX 980 TI.

Benchmark Scores well I've fried a 775' P4 12 years ago, that counts?
I picked up my PNY gtx760 as an open box for around $180 when the cards first launched, has worked great and runs everything at high settings that I toss at it (on the rare occasion I get some time to play a PC game).

http://www.game-debate.com/hardware/index.php?gid=2131&graphics=GeForce GTX 760 PNY Enthusiast OC Edition
had a 760, solid and strong video card, cannot regret,

current video card is pretty funny, im hitting clock sometimes... give it a little overclock and see how it performs, have supported some funky numbers... im not a pro on OC but the EVGA's precision X from steam works and tweaks pretty excellent for me, have hit GPU at 1190 MHZ also GPU clock offset on 150mhz and mem clock offset on 300mhz ... those are my highest clocks...beyond that cards goes unstable and pretty hot... just once have gone into throttle... since is a reference model i guess is pretty hard to chill...

Add the difference in idle power consumption (mine is on 24/7) and video playback (it's my movie player) it's a lot more than that.

$10-20/yr on a $120 card (yes, some were that cheap last fall) is a lot.

And I'm not an Nvidia fan. I'd go with AMD if it made sense. I hope that next year it will.

Hi there all.
I'm totally new here and I've read the entire post. I got one simple question. I'm waiting for new cards release and we already know those 1080 1070 and they're good but.... Pascal and Vega.
The question?
Which video card to buy now for the time being? I got a 460 GLH Gainward which got so old. I been thinking about GF 670 which price is reasonable and gives a lot a kick in my FPS's. Would that be a good choice?

for short.
CPU 3770K
Mobo ASrock ext4
Ram Kingston 16GB HyperX beast XMP 1866Mhz
2x SSD Vertex 3
1TB Seagate barracuda.
PSU corsair AXi 760.

What would you guys recommend? I don't want to buy anything crazy at the moment since I will buy something stronger and newer. it's just for the time being :)

Thanks for the advice.

Why wasting money now when you can buy a GTX1080 or a GTX1070 very soon?

Wasting for 670? It doesn't cost much.
I don't want to waste buying 1080 or 1070 and realizing after few months that it wasn't a good deal when AMD cards are released to the market but I need some more power with my current card. I'd rather wait and see what they have to offer and then make a decision. Besides maybe I would waste even more buying 1080 now. Who knows? You know?

I meant there would be no need to buy a temporary card now (at least for me), but ok, yeah you could wait for the new AMD cards.
If a 670 doesn't cost much, why ask here? Just buy it then!

I'm asking if it is a good temporary choice for the price range or maybe there's others better. There's still few months left for new pascal and for vega even more. That's why I'm asking. :)
Try playing on 460 GTX then you'll know why I'm so anxious to buy a bit better card. Either way thanks for advice :)

I would try to find a slightly more powerful card than the 670 at this time. Yes, for your current experience it is a huge upgrade, but in the larger scheme of things, it really isn't anymore. It's a 3-4 year old card, which means second hand value has dropped but so has its lifespan. You won't be having a good resale on that card. At the same time you could also shoot a bit higher, maybe 780 / 780ti level of performance which also opens up the AMD alternatives like the 290/290X. Those are powerful cards and well worth keeping a year or more which gives you ample time to see where the whole Nvidia and AMD line ups land - and on top of that, they're at least a year newer, making them easier to resell. I really wouldn't buy into three generations back, waste of time and money. I bet you could find a 780 or a 290 that is pretty close in price to the 670 second hand.

But, if you can pick up a 670 for 50-70 bucks, that may not be a bad deal. It depends on your budget too. Maybe also have a look at the GTX 770, shouldn't be priced much differently, but it's a good 10-15% faster.

In short, how much do you want to spend? GTX 970's currently go for about €200, or thereabouts. The same with 780ti's. €100 will probably get you a HD7970 (non miner, probably), 280x probably about €140 or so. Go lower and you'll find 660ti's, 760's and so on.

There is nothing wrong with buying GTX670. A 3 year old used card can be in much better condition than a 1 year old card that saw heavy oc. So go ahead an buy GTX670 - you will be able to play all games on 1980x1080 on high settings, many of them on maximum.

However, the best card to get would be HD7970 GHz edition - by this time (2016) due to improved drivers over the last 4 years it is considerably faster than GTXGTX680 in all games and as a used card does not cost much.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
GTX 670 has what, 2GB of memory? You will already choke on plenty modern titles at high/max at 1080p because of that... So sure it may have the horsepower, but when you add the needed eye candy (AA) you can run into hitching. I wouldn't go less than a 3GB card to play modern titles at high/max with AA...

As far as used 7970's/280x, etc.... beware of cards that have been mined on... nobody touched NVIDIA GPUs for the mining craze, but those 7970's and 280x (same card) were used, abused, and sold...

Anyway, just buy a 1070... or wait if you can to see what AMD cards will offer. I really don't think you can go wrong with a 1070 now or waiting...

Benchmark Scores well I've fried a 775' P4 12 years ago, that counts?

I really don't think you can go wrong with a 1070 now or waiting...
there are 4GB variants on some 680's also 670's like gigabyte SOC and EVGa Super Superclocked and FTW versions, im not sure if OP is mentioning them,

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
Correct. Most are not of the 4gb variety though. However we do not know what the OP has as you mentioned.

Thank you guys for all the posts. That's really helpful. Radeon 7970 I can tell that I been thinking about that card too. 1070 or 970 are out of the picture and so as all equivalents. I don't want to spend much money for the time being. If AMD cards show up not so good than of course I will go with 1080 so buying a card like 770 970 or so is not for me. Also it may happen that Nvidia release the 1080 Ti if AMD's cards will be powerful at start. I think that's why they have released 1080 and 1070 right now to get to the market first and sell some stuff before AMD's release :) but don't quote me please that's just my opinion.
Playing on 460 is a damn punishment for me but 670 or 7870 (been thinking about that too) or 7970 is a good choice although the last one still keeps the price a bit high. And yeah some 670 ended up with 4Gb's as well :)

I'm buying brand new 1080 or a TI version or whatever AMD's offering. Top-notch card after the summer vacation so spending 200$ or more just for 4 months is not what I wanna do and I'm sure all the prices of cards will eventually drop down.
Thanks a lot guys. I will keep looking but if you have any suggestions please don't hesitate to put it on here :)

Oh yeah worth to mention. My current TV(monitor) is maxed at 1080p so I wont play anything beyond that. Planning to buy better screen but that will happen when I get my hands on the new card.
Do you guys now about that stuff too? I got my eyes on 2. AMD uses Free-Sync but I will have to look what's the difference between the Free-Sync and G-Sync exactly.
Acer Predator XB270HUDbmiprz [1ms, 144Hz, G-Sync]
Dell S2716DG [1ms, 144Hz, G-Sync]

thanks a lot :)

However, the best card to get would be HD7970 GHz edition - by this time (2016) due to improved drivers over the last 4 years it is considerably faster than GTXGTX680 in all games

Not correct, i have both and it depends on the game. I personally prefer the GTX 680.

Of course it depends of the game but that's not the point here. From the beginning the AMD and Nvidia been sharing GPU market and some games run faster on AMD and different on Nvidia cards.
Thanks :)

Is there any proof to this?

In my experience having tested over 40 different games over the last year, including demanding titles like Crysis 3, Far Cry 4, GTA5, Witcher 3, Arma 3, Metro Last Light Redux (2014), Rainbow Six Siege, Company of Heroes 2, there is no game that struggles with 2 GB video memory on 1920x1080 if MSAA is disabled. Enabling MSAA makes difference in some games, but then again, GTX670 is too weak to have those games running with MSAA anyway..

According to techpowerup video card reviews of 2015 and 2016, HD7970 GHz and R9 280X are now significantly faster than GTX680, which was not the case in 2012 and 2013.
