GTX 970 Coil Whine Issues...

Hey guys, I recently decided to upgrade my system from a gtx670 to the new Asus 970 Strix..... However I have terrible coil whine issues, I have already rmaed 3 and I have the same problems on my 4th, on 80-100 fps the card is buzzing and it also affects the sound output... I would like to know if anyone has purchased a 970 gpu that doesn't have these problems so I can decide if it's worth giving it another shot or giving up and buying a 290x instead...

MSI 970 here, zero coil whine (Noise dampened case though). Have you had coil whine with previous cards? Could be PSU and not your GPU.
Also, coil whine is more prevalent when you turn off VSync. Try turning VSync on and checking if it's as bad.

Find the offending choke and put some clear nail polish or silicon on it... this, sadly, is normal on some GPUs. Perhaps try an EVGA instead? MSI I hear has some issues...

It is surprising to me that it is affecting the sound though (unless you are using the sound through the GPU and with that I would ask why)..

MSI owner here, also.

Zero coil whine present before 70-80FPS..... after that, a slightly noticeable high pitch whine develops.

However, no sound issues to report.... only high IC temps lol

It could be bad caps in the PSU, poor EMI suppression, or bad mobo, the PCIE power lanes are badly routed. Gosh, it could be even a ground loop in between your monitor, sound system etc things.

And the last thing is the card... unfortunately I've had few vocal performers too... there was nothing I could do really, silicon glue wasn't enough.

Possibly psu or specific brand flaw. If its bad get electronic grade silicon sealant.

On this system (P67, 2500k) i have installed a 6870, a 6950 and two 670s and none of them has these problems even in world of warcaft were the menus hit 500fps...! I am thinking of changing the card to a 290x for the same money... What do you think about that??

I'd just try a different brand of 970. It's not like the Strix is the cheapest, there are other manufacturers available.

Either way do what you want because obviously you dont need our help.

If you really must switch chip brands get ddu. Pull ethernet chord from pc or router. Remove the driver then use ddu. Shut machine down and pull card. Plug new card in.

If you can get a Sapphire 290(X) VaporX to fit in your case go for it. Otherwise Powercolor, Club3D, Visiontek, HIS, Diamond MM, XFX, Gigabyte, MSI, are the others.

I've purchased two 970 Strix cards for a friend (the first broke down after two days of use), none of them had coil whine, but I really dislike the terrible bending of this card

Do you believe it's prudent to judge THOUSANDS of these gpus by a couple of experiences in this thread?

Every gpu I have owned that had coil whine went away after awhile. My old 7970 had it so bad I left it running all night on a games loading screen for 200fps to produce whine. I didn't have coil whine when I woke up.

my 290 initially did but then quit doing it. i guess it had to stretch its legs or something

I was just toying with the idea of possibly going SLI for the first time, and buying another GTX 970 G1 Gaming since I have been so impressed with it. However, when reading on Newegg's reviews (Specifically all the lower rated ones) everybody is complaining about coil whine.... and the people complaining about the noises it makes...

I have not had a SINGLE problem with this GTX 970... So it leads me to believe those reviews are more of a system issue on their parts and they are just blaming the card, when possibly they may not be able to support it or something. (and it could also be faulty cards of course)

Anyway, only issue I am seeing with going SLI on my rig is the space in the R300 I have, with the extended back plate/outer case on the G1 Gaming, I would have to modify the Hard drive rack to fit it in, and maybe even do some other modifying since the 3rd PCIx3.0 slot is so near to the PSU and this card is so damn big. Most likely not gonna be worth it though. Just thinking about it. :)

Anyway, like I said, I have not noticed any noises louder than my already quiet fans in my system. Then again, I don't even pay attention to it to much with a head set on. Seems like its a hit or miss thing if it does not have to do with peoples systems supporting it.

The PSU might have some part in it, but afaik it comes down to each and every gpu. Its some certain cap that whines when you reach a certain amount of fps. I think people just don't understand it goes away after awhile.

Well my GTX280 did whine always... since five years they do the same, so it isn't a rule.
My Intel X58SO VRM did also whine, and because of PSU and and the two GTX280, the whine did become lower when I attached two auxiliary power connectors that the board did have, but the sucker still whined.

It is called Kirchoffs law :D and poor motherboard design, if some other criteria ain't met... The board was not designed to use such two glutton behemoths, with single mid tier cards there were zero problems.

So imagine, I had a holy singing choir besides me... :fear:, but at least it did run Crysis :D

My new MSI 290x had a slight coil whine for the first 20 min of use. Of course I clocked it up right off the bat to find the max frequency stock voltage. Now I have zero whine off the card.

Ok guys, thank you for your time.... In the 2nd gpu I had tried to make the coil whine stop with furmark before i send it for rma again but didn't see a result... However i didn't try to let it run at 1000fps for some time.... I decided not to rma this one, because i really like this model that's why i have been in so much trouble the last month trying to find a good card.... I will try to stop the whine with this way, thanks for your advice....!

try raising or lowering the clocks by 5MHz. sometimes that helps.
if not, then try raising or lowering the voltage very slightly.
