Just popped the IHS off of my GTX460 this morning, and wanted to share some photos.
Despite my belief that i would get a bit lower temps, they actually remained the same, 840/2000mhz@1.050V - 76oC, 15min MSI kombustor run.
What i have on it is Accelero S1 rev2 modded to fit the GTX460.
Yes my temps are a bit high, but for the love of god i cant get them lower. Tried all kind of crap... you name it... replacing thermal paste, tried with little paste or more paste, tried reseating and checking the heatsink, lapped the IHS and when nothing of the above worked i decided to scrap the IHS and try direct contact.
Also after i mounted the heatsink onto the core without the IHS i reseated the heatsink like 5 times a every time same temps (or worse when i tried a bit more TP)...
So i guess my card is a bit on the crap side...
Gainward GTX460 Golden Sample 1GB:
In regards to the IHS and its removal... What i did is taped some duct tape all around the IHS and even put some soft pads on the areas where i thought my knife would exert pressure on the PCB. Shove the knife at the corner, some 2-3mm deep and slowly applied pressure and the IHS just popped...
Oh and, IHS borders are 5mm thick, if u cut more than 5mm u risk cutting/damaging some of the little transistors surrounding the core itself!
Some photos in attachment.
