Hard drive whistles only after I log into Steam

On startup, I have Steam prompt me to log in. Only after I log in and the program begins loading does my HDD start to whistle.

As far as I know, Steam is the only program I use that accesses another partition (D), as it is the only program I use frequently that is placed there.

Is this a bad sign?

what do you mean by whistle? is it the drives activity that causes it to whistle?

Depends on the sound. My 1TB Samsung something makes this "woooooop" noise when spinning up.

This is an older Maxtor that makes more of a grinding/cracking sound when the hard drive is active. The whistle frequency is at least 14 kHz from what I can tell, so hopefully that helps to give a better idea of what I'm talking about.
