Hard Drives

I use my seagate barracuda 80gig sata for my main drive i bought 2 ide seagate barracuda 160 for a steal 50.00..Now if were to run raid on the 2 160 ide drives would i see a preformance gain??I've never run raid.. tried last night it worked but i couldn't notice any gains??I set it to stripe size 64 raid 0.Then when im installing the n-force drivers it asks if want to install a weird ide driver i allways say yes but with raid dont know??So am i better keeping the 80 sata for main drive or raid the main drive??


Oh yeah forgot to tell you took me three days to get raid to run cause i got owned by the old ide cable i had.My friend came over to help he noticed right away that i needed a high speed ide cable.Switched cable's installed raid first try after the mistake..

You should notice application loading is faster, and possibly Windows startup, but other than that and anything else where HDD access is frequent and lots of data, it ain't going to increase your FPS in games, or really make anything else faster.

One other strategy I've heard speeds up load times is to have applications on the 2nd hard drive (Windows on the 1st.). I would NEVER go with raid 0 becuase of the headaches and it's really not RAID (there's no data redundancy) - one drive fails and you are shit out of luck. I am thinking of doing RAID 1 for my data disk (photos, music, documents, videos etc.)

Run benchmarks like HD tach or atto. They should show a gain.

Sorry for bumping it but ive been messing with for 3 days now so i'm a bit impatient.

But i downloaded that program ran the test not using raid from 80gig the sata one gets 126megs a sec the 2 160gig ide ones get 16megs a sec both???

Like i said i wont make any more posts..i posted friday and asked for help 400-500 members visit some average have 10+ 20+ posts per day.I joined some other forum and was helped quicker??I know i haven't helped this forum much but i have been a member for over a year and helped a few when i could??Like i said i enjoy reading reviews i love ati tool.I think you should watch how you respond to other people's rants!![Polaris573]

It can be @ times, like any webbrowser based forums can be... insert "ingredient = people" & it happens, comes w/ the territory.



* Weekends can be "slow" here, like @ many forums... especially Friday & Saturday nites I have noticed @ least. Folks get out into the 'realworld' more imo on those nites.

Well, gee: I posted this on a Saturday nite, lol! It's too cold out there tonite imo (winter is bad here) & I can hear the wind blowing & snow flying... movie-tyme, baby, & staying in tonite boy...

hey man chill or leave. not everyone here is an expert, in reality theres a base of about 40 members who know how to correctly fix almost any problem.

Run your drives normally not in raid. raid0 is mainly needed for very high bandwidth programs and servers, not your average home pc. If you can maintain 120+ mbps speed from your drive you are fine.

I wouldn't give any 1 person that much credit here or on any forums really, in this "art & science" we're all into - I'd say, @ best, 50% success/failure overall, for any one person as far as solving problems... & for example?

I wouldn't give myself that high of a rating, on ALL levels of this stuff, %-wise either, personally. In certain areas, lol, I am "out of it" in this field, like anyone else might be... but, I know folks here that ARE expert in them (where I am not), & I can consult them if need be, & have.

(The community itself however, composed of all those parts, does a LOT better fixing hassles imo @ least, than any individual does. This IS the "power of peoples" lol, so-to-speak, vs. that of the single individual, imo!)
