I remember a children's book series called Berenstein Bears,yet now it's called Berenstain bears.

I remember those bears, even though I had no idea how they were called. Being from Portugal, I guess I never was that exposed to them.

That said, I'm currently reading Murakami's 1Q84, where basically the same thing happens. The initial story occurs in 1984. The characters both experience strange, out-of the ordinary occurrences (the male protagonist re-writing someone else's piece of fiction for publishing, which goes against his own literary aspirations; and the female protagonist abandons a traffic jam on an overhead highway, by leaving it through the emergency exit). In doing so, they essentially cross a threshold into a parallel universe, or 1Q84, where little details about the world are suddenly changed, with historic events being written or re-written compared to their previous reality (ie, the japanese police forces are now using semi-automatic weapons instead of trusty old revolvers, the sky has two moons...) But essentially, both characters are the only ones with the perception that something is strange and amiss.

Fun fact is that these bears currently occupy my bank via numerous posters for god knows what reason:

It makes me want to punch them every time I walk in. There's nothing creepier than a cardboard cutout of those things.

Whoa, they've been lightened too, I remember them as darker.
Pretty sure the male bear was a brown bear, and a fair bit taller than the female too.

I'm almost 100000000000% sure it was "Ein" not "Ain". Somethings wrong somewhere lol. Looking at the linked article, I also remember the "doctored" image with the red background behind the bears and not the other one.

I remember it as Berenstain Bears. Read some of the books to my kids when they were little. I think the name came from Stanley and Jan Berenstain, the authors of the books.
