I never even gave powerplay a chance to mess with my 3870, I edited the BIOS so powerplay was effectively disabled - no problems to date.

You cant actually disable powerplay as it is more involved than just clockspeeds, thats why ATI cant put any powerplay options into the CCC like the old mobile GPU's had. Different systems behave quite differently with even the same software running so some people get problems with it while others have no issues, CPU speed seems to be a big factor although its not clear why. My 3870 worked fine with Crysis, Bioshock & COD4 but a couple slightly older less demanding games were unplayable.. I didn't believe the folk that said it was my AMD64 4200 X2 that was the problem (didn't make any sense) got fed up in the end sold the 3870 & bought an 8800GTS 512 which works perfectly with everything I have thrown at it.

I gather with the 4870 they have made some changes to the hardware to eliminate Powerplay problems ... if they have got it sorted then I will probably buy a 4870 later in the year, need convincing first :)
