Heat treatment!

Okay I need some help from you SLI/Xfire guys. I gots two geepeeyous and one gets a little hotter than the other under the covers by a good difference.

I know my Kraken isn't helping the airflow but it's ALWAYS been like this. I was thinking of getting a spot fan or a PCI fan and shoving it up in between the two hotties to get the one on top to cool down but I'd rather have 100% sure and sound advice before dropping moolah from my dragon bank on something like that.

I do have that giant fan bringing in air from the front that came with my case, and the whole thing is the standard "front in, back and top out" type flow. After typing a bit it dropped to 48c/40c on the cards BUT I'm pretty sure the top card does all the pleasure since SLI profiles suck.

I need your ~~beauty~~ advice guys.

The top card always gets a lot hotter and it happens with my cards too.

If you want to add an extra fan to reduce this that's fine, but it's only strictly needed if the card tends to overheat.

It just gets a tad loud to the point if a game or a chat gets quiet I can hear the humming, but no throttling is happening.

Yup, 8-11 C temp differences are pretty regular on air cooled SLI'd cards.

Have seen this behaviour too and it's impossible to get around unless you have some exotic case / cooling setup. One of the main reasons I prefer single over dual. The noise...

Use an extension cable on the 2nd card and mount it somewhere else. Of course, this will take a big case and/or modding. Zip ties do wonders LOL
I guess you'd need a long SLI bridge, too.

my top card can run 20 C hotter than the bottom one..

if you cool the bottom one more the top one runs cooler as well.. if my bottom one runs say 60 C my top one will run 80 C.. or it can be 50 C and 70 C..

i have two different fan profiles set.. the bottom one is set to run the fans max at 60 C the top one is set to run the fans max at 70 C.. this gives me 50 C and 70 C..

i also have two case side fans blowing directly on the cards..

what happens is simple.. the entire card heats up.. the back plate on the bottom card runs near the gpu temperature.. the fans on the top card pick up this hot air off the bottom cards back plate..

the heat from both cards then helps cook the cpu..

the case side fans are 100% essential for my set up..

short of water cooling the top card and pulling its cooling air from elsewhere (front or bottom of the case) some extra fan noise is unavoidable.. i kind of cringe when i see pics of some quad card set ups.. he he
