hello there this is my first post here hope i made it into the right place,i had some issues with my msi r6850 oc 8cm prw fan edition, first it started with some flickering when i launched dragon age inquisition.after that each game i started would go ok for 1 minute or so after the flickering began,i tried puting another pci vga standard graphics adapter(1mb) and went to bios put pci/peg config so i could boot up with 2 graphic cards and i started windows...now this is the tricky part,my windows could recognize my hd6800 graphics series in device manager,in gpu-z,msi afterburner but in gpu-z the values were all messed up
ddd.gif
i hope that someone can help me here,i can't seem to find the original bios for my gpu anywhere.i tried all of the bios revisions found here for msi-hd6850 none seemed to work, please someone help me i can't afford another gpu like this one and i need to fix it somehow (if any more info is needed please ask i will post anything that will help you solve my problem,i really need to get this card working again) p.s. some values in afterburner seem to spike up and down 0%-100% usage... can't seem to figure it out please need your help, maybe i did something wrong by accident or i don't know

Hi

Welcome to TPU

Try this:
Fully Uninstall vga drivers [Select: express uninstall]
restart system; allow windows to install generic vga driver
download and run MSI Live Update 6 [scan for *vga Vbios update]
re-flash *If required
reinstall drivers

Model Number?
P/N number?
[should be on the back of the vga PCB]

Note: fill in full system specs here including Make, Model Numbers and OS

MSI live is junk IMHO, only a critical bios update for the GPUs bios will install. And did you infact flash the GPU?

Do yourself a favor and goto the msi forums and make a *request bios for ***** GPU*

Type the cards serial number in the post and just tell them you flashed the card and didn't back up the bios. Within an hour or so one of the mods will post a proper bios file and the flashing tools for you to use.

thanks guys for helping me,i will post on msi as soon as i get home, yesterday i made an report to amd official site regarding the last drivers 14.12 omega wich had some issues with my card "driver stopped working" after launching any game, yes i have flashed all bioses on techpowerup, could it need a reflow ? i dont know what to think about this, had not seen a card fail like this one ...it all started after a lil shortage back at my place if that has any deal with that it shut down my pc during the night but the next morning it all went ok for like 5 hours and than it began flickering in games, then the problems persisted, more flickering, driver errors, and "input not supported"on the monitor after 5-7 pc restarts with 2 attempts of uninstaling the drivers the 2nd time the display went all white.then black and i gave it a restart and finaly "no signal"

did you put in a request with MSI so your sure to have a proper matching Bios?

Yet us know, and if it works please upload it somewhere and send a link to W1zzard so he can add it to the gpu bios collection.

Is 6850 recognised at DOS prompt: ? by atiflash -ai 0
[0 or 1 depending on the PCIe slot the vga card is in]

Note:
If the vga card is recognised then just flash with a copy of the original Vbios image

wait... so recently it started flickering in games? what kind of flickering? how do we know it's not simply dying of old age?

although since it's an OC edition, the first thing to try was to reduce clocks or increase voltage, not to flash bioses

how could it die of old age when i bought the card in february? without waranty but the card was new,in its original box,all accesories but without waranty trough a reseler the card was tested before i bought it,worked 100% fine and i allways kept the card in afterburner at shader clock at 600mhz and memory clock at 800mhz clock speed not at 800mhz and 1000mhz clock flickering like
after launching dragon age inquisition after first loading screen, the it persisted, dude i flashed bios after the card started crashing because i had those values in gpu-z and i thought the card flashed the bios or had some errors on it idk,it's a total mistery,i could get a log file for the card from aida64 extreme, would that help ? cause the card started

Uninstall Catalyst, clean it out, and install Catalyst 14.12 instead. GPU-Z is misreading *current* information, which would be an indication that there might be an issue with the currently installed driver.
This feels like VRAM failing to me though, but I don't want to rule software out quite yet. Try booting up a Linux LiveCD and see if the same thing occurs. If it doesn't, I would run on the premise that it's the driver or some aspect of Windows.

will try that too, thanks for your reply,i think of that myself, could one of my eplida memory chips from the card itself be the problem ? or could one of the soldings on the gpu chip have melted a little and my card could be in short circuit?

It's possible, that would still be a defect requiring RMA. There isn't much you can do about solder that has flowed and now would now be making a short, but it doubt that's the case. Solder flowing isn't a known issue with 6800-series cards. I would sooner believe that a single DRAM IC could have kicked the bucket but I'm not going to jump to that conclusion without some more testing done in the software.

so if it's to be a memory chip could that be changed ? on a robot workbench ?
