Helping a friend with a haswell build

Haven't played with haswells before, so a bit wary of this build. He picked an MSI Z97A Gaming 6 mobo, and of course a 4690K cpu. I found them both at a fairly good sale price. He's on a fixed income, and is trying to slowly build a gaming box. So just to get this thing up and running I got him to buy on sale an Evo 212 cooler. It was cheap, and should do for stock speeds. What kind of cooler will he need to go 4.5-4.7 ghz? I'm assuming this cpu will do that on air?

Evo 212 cooler should be good enough they are pretty good coolers ( and you can fit a second fan to end up with a push pull configuration)

Now with 970s coming in at 450+ shipped, not sure what to get him for a video card.....

what video card would you upgrade your system to ?
for him thats a starting point and it also depends on how far his hand reach into his pocket

Prices should drop with the new cards being released by AMD and soon Nvidia will no doubt respond with price reviews

I'm going to get a 970, and pass him my 480 which I bought brand new just over a year ago. I'll have to lend him a gtx260 for now. He mainly runs second life and world of tanks, so it'll do.
And yes, he would like to try more games, so I'm trying to build a system for him that will, eventually.

Save $5 on the CPU and price match it => $284.98
Also there is a good deal on Xigmatek Dark Knight SD1483 => $46.99
I know it costs $10 more, but you can save $10 by using the thermal compound that comes with the cooler.

Most likely not, except if you get a very good CPU.

It's the "see it in your cart" one..Zotac.
Zotac makes nice cards.
IMO,They're the "Sapphire" of Nvidia.
..only a notch better.

I have one..but I use my own err..hardware to mount it.
nylon washers/bolts/wing nuts/faucet washers/washers/lock washers

Tbh..@ 4.7 Haswell is probably going to be roasting no matter what cooler you use.
..but it has teh High IPC..I guess.
Expect 4.4-6 for daily.

the majority of haswell chips aren't gonna do much more then 4.5 without stupid levels of voltage e.g > 1.30V
moar ghz's does not always equal faster the 4670k at stock is more then twice as fast as a phenom II at 4Ghz
the rule is generally if you can't keep the voltage under 1.30v then don't bother
most chips start hitting there wall at 4.4 so if you can't get 4.4 at 1.25v then don't bother

Yeah,but the IPC on those chips is much higher than Nehalem
They scale pretty good, too...every Mhz gained gained is one earned

Evo212 is a great cooler for $35.....in push/pull config, it keeps my 3.8ghz Xeon E3 1240 @24-30c idle/50-60c loaded. Also keeps my 4.2ghz i7-4790k at 35-40c idle/60-70c loaded. (But I have a large case with ALOT of airflow )

Did they do the "improved (crappy) TIM" of the 4790k on the 4690k as well? Honestly for gaming I'd be pretty happy at 4.5 with a haswell. My brother runs a 4440 at 3.3GHz and he hasn't had a single problem with the CPU performance. IPC for haswell is so fast that the only way you can actually use it is playing quake stuff at 333 FPS on single cores and video rendering on multi core...

Well, put it together. Have to say I'm impressed. Thankfully my buddy isn't into ocing, so the 4690k's low ocing potential isn't that big of a deal.
I'll leave it at stock for now... 3.9 at turbo will still blow away his old q9450.... well mine, but in a past lifetime...
