I had to change my vote from 8 tb "a lot more"

I have recently begun to download a lot more video content from old YouTube days. I went on a nostalgia trip and ended up watching trubritar, maxishine, and Logan from Tigerdirect only to realize the video quality was significantly degraded. I thought; weird, maybe I'm old and I don't recall how bad video looked in 07-08. I compared this to vhs, and can see a noticeable difference how old videos no one cares about are compressed to worthlessness. Since last year I have used up 2 more TB. I just ordered two more 8 TB drives.

Yeah. I also need a lot more space for my youtube mirror now. It's getting too wild with disappearing content.

Now that I said that, I should also re-download old archives (if still available) in case yt-dlp now gets a higher quality version...

What is "Enough" storage is just a temporary thing - The need for more will always come around for many reasons, so I can't say enough is enough because what's enough today will not be tomorrow.
I started off years ago with a 30GB HDD drive and back then (2000-2001) it was considered a big drive.
You can't hardly find anything that small these days except as a used drive. Even pen (USB) drives have exceeded that amount as a standard so....

From my perspective:
"Enough is never enough".

Just keep everything on your desktop, it doesn't take space on a disk! - which is an argument I heard several times in my life so it has to be true, right?
Until icons start falling off the desktop. When that happens, you know you need a larger monitor.

I just ordered 24TB of HGST Enterprise drives to upgrade my spinning 10TB. Refurbs, but stupid cheap at 89 bucks each. And absurdly low failure rates for just mass almost cold storage in RAID 1 for now.

In my 2 " best" systems i have 1 TB drives. And that are the biggest ones. Don't need more space

Samsung 860QVO and Crucial MX500

I use the MX500 as Master for my Personal files. Photo's, Programs, Music, Retro stuff. And i have a clone of it on 2TB HDD. That HDD is not connected after cloning.

32TB I guess.
AI takes a lot of space. Games take a lot of space. Digitizing your film takes a lot of space.
But, doing it in a secure manner takes more.
RAID, backups, offsite backups.
I am the offsite backup for a family member, and they are mine.
So yeah I could run with a lot less if I had no backups, paid for the cloud, and deleted unused games. But it's not that expensive to have the relatively non-recurring costs of doing backups yourself.

After my last upgrade, I now have no spinning rust in my pc. Just in my nas.

2tb, with a plan to add maybe 4tb a bit down the track and migrate my files/games to just that drive. But in fair, I've not even used 1/4 of my current boot drive.

My spinning rust is likely to increase substantially when 30+ TB drives drop and I get a second nas, but for now, I have a moderate amount of space (80TB.) I'd like to have about 200TB in my primary nas and a similar amount in it's backup. I feel like that would be enough as while video is getting bigger I've stopped looking or caring about any resolution beyond 4k as my eyesight isn't good enough to find visual difference in 8k media. Entirely likely I'd never fill the 200TB either. I don't accumulate much more than a TB or 2 a year.

Just wondering that should I upgrade my SATA drives to 1-2TB ones or get a PCIE->dual M.2 adapter and just get more drives alongside the current ones?

Those adapters cost a pretty penny if your mainboard BIOS doesn't have bifurcation. SATA SSDs are fine for almost all use cases.

No idea what's bifurcation, I suppose it does as it's a somewhat modern B550 one.

I have nothing against SATA speedwise, I have only one connector left (and that's already on a PCIe controller card since my motherboard's 4 SATA connectors are in use)

Ability to split lanes in a single slot.

If your motherboard doesn't have it, the expansion card will have to have a PCIe switch built into it rather than just being pass-through

Most modern motherboards do. At least on the main PCIE slots.

On my work rigs, I currently have a total of 282.79TB of storage, including my internal & external setups, but not backups, which are on separate, dedicated drives.... but this is NOT because all I do is set around & download moar & moar bloated-ass gamz, pron, musak, and movies day after day after day....

It's because I do 3D/CAD/CAM work, and them files tend to get massively huge after multiple revisions and changes on their way to the final versions :D

Why does seemingly EVERY friggin thing here have to centered around gamz anywayz ?

However, my home/personal usage is moar modest, with only 12TB of space in use for my OS, personal files, apps etc..
Yeye, cad... it's a huge load of pron !

As for games, because that's what the majority of people who are frequent these pc hardware sites are interested in.

Hey what's that, some kind of subscription where they send you two 20 TB disks every time their app detects less than 40 TB free on your PC NAS 42U storage server?

For an astronomical price essentially…
