whenever i play a game in the internet(steam, UT2004,FEAR) my ping gets over 200ms.
How can I reduce the ping?

Well, your ping is the time it takes for a host to respond. Different factors are involved in this. One of is of course bandwidth currently in use by your computer and the server (and routers in between). So one thing you could do is shut down everything else that uses bandwidth ie downloads, messengers etc. Another important thing is the amount of hops to the server, this basically is the amount of routers in between, every router in between adds a bit of latency. I'd suggest you pick a server which is close to you. Playing on European servers when in the USA or vice versa would get you a higher latency on average. Since the packets have to travel in your country, find their way to transatlantic lines and from there find their way to the server in whatever country those are. A long route indeed.
Though when the server is hosted locally the packets will most likely go to your ISP, from your ISP go to the servers ISP and then to the server. Quite shorter.

You could also read up on things like MTU, window size and such terms. You're messing with TCP/IP settings here so if you're new to that don't expect much succes, it's not as easy as it sounds.

For steam there are 3 commands u need to know to get ur game to run nicer and reduce ping they are rate, cl_updaterate, cl_cmdrate. rate should be about 20000 if u have cable. cl_updaterate should be your avg fps, and cl_cmdrate should be 101.

If you are laggin that bad it is probably ur on dial up or u are havin issues with a router/firewall, network, cable modem, or u just are tooo far away from where u are tryin to play.

I believe the second part is what DanTheBanjoman is sayin in layman's terms. Got to love layman's terms.

a another aspect can be if you are using cable!!

Most cable companys (in the UK this is) share the bandwidth for the whole street\block\town\ city and whatever meaning sometimes your bandwidth to the internet can really be reduced at peak hours.

Also do a little research at routers as i finds that some are better than others with reducing ping timmings.

I am using a Belkin router\modem and my ping was as low as 35 on call of duty 2 yesterday and the highst its been is 150.

However, like the others said it depends on your area and where you are connecting to.
