Well, considering i have never used an ATI card before, this had nothing to do with Nvidia fanboyism , just that my loyalty belongs to the company with the best card at the momant of purchase :nutkick:

so i have finally taken the plunge based on the data i have seen and just ordered the 4870
( http://www.komplett.dk/k/ki.aspx?sku=355990) which i should be picking it up tomorrow.

I an kindda excited to see if it is as the reviews claim :respect:

specifically as i have been otherwise inpressed with my current overclocked 8800GT.

Here comes my question;
what driver should i install on it?
which ones have been most stable, best performance and give room for overclock? do i just use the one on the installation CD ?

those with first hand ATI experince please should enlighten me.

Get the driver off ati hompage. tough I use an older (and crappier) ati card, the cd drivers ran unstable on my system. Andy by donwloading the drivers via page, you sure get the latest version.

I was looking for the latest drivers for the HD 4870 but the 4800 series is not listed on the ATI homepage.

But if you look at the bottom of that page you'll notice a link to the ATI Cat 8.6 drivers for Windows. That link takes you here...

I would recommend the hotfix drivers, which are available here on TPU in the downloads section. But I'm not sure first hand if they are the best. When my HD4850 comes, in about....68 minutes

, I will be testing different drivers to find the best ones.

No, some people were dumping there BIOS to flash new clocks/fan speeds to there cards. The dumps only contained half the needed information, and it killed their cards. W1zz wrote an article on how to fix it.

If you want lower temps, check out the "Fan Fix"....it is just editing a CCC profile to lock the fan at a set fan speed.

based on what i'm seeing so far it is safe to edit the fan profile with rbe on 4850 and 4870 .. just make sure you have a 128k bios on 4870

The "fan fix" via CCC works well with Crossfire too! It will list one card as "0" and the other as "1". I've been getting the best performance using the 8.6 hotfix drivers found here: http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=35298

You want those for now, dont use the 8.6 and dont use whats on the disk, just use these.

I cant wait to bench it after i read Erockers posts of romancing his cards.
I must say it will have t to perform exceptionally well to fill the shoes of my single overclocked 8800GT that i can get above 15,000 marks on 3Dmark06 and 33 FPS in Crysis high settings.

question- must i uninstal Nvidia graphic drivers before i install ATI with my new ATI card ?

Since they are for 2 different companies and technologies i should think its ok right? i just want to make it easier to swap cards without the rigorous process of driver reinstalls everytime.
