I figure I'll round out this thread by saying that they opted for the i3 2100 + this motherboard for ~$200. This will leave about $30 budgeted for RAM and anything <$60 say for a GPU. I think they'll be quite pleased with their build.

Would a Radeon 6670 be bottlenecked by this CPU? I tried to see what Nvidia had to offer for the sub $70 market and it seems as if the only thing they have is the GT 520, a huge step down.

It turns out that the Radeon 6670 I was looking at is actually DDR3, hence being below $60 after rebate. GDDR5 6670's are, more realistically, about $80 after rebate in some cases. With that in mind, I'm not sure if they'll use a Radeon 6670. I'm open to suggestions any also input from anyone who may own a DDR3 6670.

If you cannot or do not want to add a video card for some reason, the A8 is definitely the best choice. Not sure what Ivy Bridge and the HD4000 will bring, but Intel has always struggled with driver issues with their IGP, so the A8 is still probably a better choice, even with Ivy Bridge on the way. If you can add a video card, Intel is the way to go.

LOLOL. Anyways a gpu like a 6670 or if you can hang out till the new low end 28nm gpu's come out that might provide more performance without the need for a pci-e power connector.

He mentions in the previous page about the upgrade path.
A8-3850 would be in socket FM1, fastest upgrade should be the unlocked A8-3870K (unless AMD still wants to add moar CPU line here, but Trinity will be on an FM2 socket).
i3 2100 sits on the LGA1155, fastest upgrade should be the i7 2700K, not to mention the Ivy Bridge processor is also an upgrade, up to i7 3770K.

im pretty sure the trinity's will be backward compatible with older sockets like all other AMD cpus.

also whats this about the fastest upgrade? this dude was on a budget. he should be ashamed to even think of the i7 2600K.

also i3s are complete waste of money IMO. i used them and didnt like them a single bit.

APUs are severely under rated. my friend shifted from an i3 lappy to an e350 lappy and he is still amazed at the performance and battery life.

better to get a cheap 2 core unlockable phenom and get a nice GPU.
most X2 555 unlock to quads. i got 2 and both unlocked to quads with 3.6 stable.

just to answer a few things i saw got missed:

with SCII, remember that there is no in game benchmark - every website uses their own test, so they are NOT comparable with each other.

APU + AMD GPU 'crossfire' (its called AMD dual graphics) is not the same as desktop crossfire - it only works in DX10/11, DX9 and OGL apps run off only one card (in my laptops case, the onboard APU GPU) so while i know you have the i3 system now, i thought adding that info worthwhile.

a very important question here... was this laptop, or desktop? IMO the AMD systems are superior for laptop use, because of the incredibly low power consumption at idle
