Intel says T max is 72c for Devils canyon.

That's TCase, which refers to max temperature at Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS), that is ~5C higher than my i7-3770 stated TCase is (~67c). Even on the cooler Spring days, hits high 70s in Prime95 tests. In regards to applications, if you are installing large packages, your processor may be constantly hitting boost at 4.4GHz?, thus leading to the temps you see.

This may sound dumb but have you plug in the pump header?

i think it shouldnt shoot the temp just like that

I have noticed how temps suddenly spike up with this CPU (in my system) when doing certain tests and I have seen this when doing the Windows Experience test.

I also ran OCCT at 20C room temp for 10 minutes and saw my CPU got as warm as 72C max as seen on Gigabyte System Information View, but the OCCT reported the max my cores ran at was in the late 70s and early 80s with the hottest core being at 84C.

I can't be certain which temp monitor software is the most accurate (in relation to the gigabyte one, OCCT with the individual core temp or another alternative).

From the looks of things this sort of thing is normal as could imagine the idea is that the CPU is overclocked temporarily (by the Turbo Boost) to do certain tasks a bit quicker, but the overclock isn't actually intended to be ran for a significant amount of time.

I could only imagine the better work around for maintaining the CPU temps during CPU intensive tasks might be to disable the Turbo Boost which might keep the CPU within better temps with the CPU being stuck with it's stock 4GHz speed which isn't bad with obvious factors considered.

As for the silicone of my CPU it was one of the very first batches and I pre-ordered the CPU too; the batch is L336D107.

I also got my CPU cooler within its first release along with the H100 only to find that the H80 helped as a good back up due to the flaw with the H100's pump at the time.

Too bad the Tuniq 120 Extreme can't be found anymore. That was one of the best for temp, to noise to price ratio air coolers made.
