I would say it was the last great gpu but greatest nah. I owned both a 1080ti and a Titan Xp and the Titan Xp still felt way cooler to own but as far as last great high end gpu you really felt good about spending 700+ on I would say it was it.

After that we got the 2080ti which honestly for me anyways had a lot of legs but cost way too much, then we got the meh AF 3080ti and this gen we got the 4080 super or 4090 whatever you want to count and as awesome as 4090 is no gpu costing 1500+ can be called best ever lol.

Well, I'm going to say yes considering how great of a GPU it was for its time and the cost to own one. I still own and run a GTX980, 1080, and 1080Ti in other computers and they are still going strong. Now I have to spend over 1k to get a top tier GPU or 2K for the best.

TitanXp was a 1200.us gpu lol and barely beat the 700.us 1080ti ftw3 hehe

I still loved it and it's all black aesthetics, and when my buddies came over and looked at my computers they were always wowed by the Titan even though it made no sense. I also got it for Free so that is probably why I am so fond of it.

Pretty awesome card I remember having major fomo over it I think at the time you needed two crossfired amd cards to even match it and that was mostly a crap shoot. Although those were the days it was hard to even get 60fps at maxed out games at 1600x1200..... How times have changed.

I got one for a couple of 1080s I wasn't using anymore as a trade both FE models as well. Honestly I preferred them for SLI which I did on every card back then up to the 10 series.

Yeah I kind of agree with you on that 'tho actually when they cut the price and release the 8800GT that was so much better deal price/performance wise anyway 8800GTX/GT was huge leap forward in performance and tech innovation......So far for me the list will go something like this:8800GT,Voodoo,1080 TI,7970,RX 480/580....

yea just like the times where after 6 months your pc was already heavily outdated while paying thousands of dollars again, because tech advanced so fast, does that make the gpus from then the bst gpus ever? no. the best gpu ever is the fastest currently available its that simple.

Not how it works. “Best” anything is usually seen by sane people as an amalgamation of traits. Especially when we are, as in this thread, discussing historical relevance. The fastest current GPU is just that - the fastest right now. Historically, fastest GPUs of any given generation rarely were considered “best”. Notice how many people mentioned the 8800 GTX/GT? Notice how nobody brought up the 8800 Ultra?
If you forgive the analogy, that would be like claiming that the Rimac Nevera is the best car of all time.

1080ti was not cheap either. just because prices now are so fucked doesnt mean it was good back then. just much better than now.

maxwell and pascal were much more expensive than their predecessors.

best means best and new one is always faster than the predecessor . why are you making shit up? in this context best means exactly what it says. especially on hardware.

Nah, I disagree. The best GPU is certainly not the fastest one.

R9 295x2 was fastest for a loong time, but certainly not the best GPU. 980ti with its 6GB (best?) was eclipsed by a much cheaper 1070 with 8GB already. By then, the 1080ti wasn't out yet. The best GPU was the 1080. I would say it still stands, in a relative sense, there was ZERO difference between a 1080 or a 1080ti. The latter was some 30% faster and had some 30% higher price & memory. Let's fast forward time a little bit to Turing. The 2080ti best GPU of its days? Hm. Questionable at the very least. Any Ampere top end GPU? Definitely NOT the bestest GPUs ever.

The list goes on.

Price & longevity makes the product in the end. The 1080ti was lauded not because of its inital MSRP, but because of what it sold at later. Similarly, the 1080 was perceived too expensive for a long time, too.

Just buying the fastest GPU is just going to make you drop the highest amount of cash, but in no way does it access the best GPUs. Not in the least because the build quality of a 104-part (like the 1080) versus a 102-part (like the 1080ti) does not vary at all, but the 102 part is going to have to be cooled at a much higher wattage. As a result, I've seen a much longer lifetime on 104's than I've seen on 102's, most notably on Kepler. A GPU is more than the chip.

Hmm actually price was really good.....best high-end GPU when we add inflation on release it was lover then 1k$.....so just compare that with any release after Pascal also previous GTX 980TI release price was not that much lower either so......

Hi,
Yeah above compared to nvidia selling titan's for 1200 a pop which barely beat third party 1080ti hehe

This only happened because Nvidia withdrew the Titan brand from the AIB channel; and chose to distribute it themselves. In doing so they've alienated all markets where they don't directly operate, greatly restricting its availability and maximum potential. It wasn't until the Turing generation with Titan RTX that the latter issue was somewhat addressed (Turing FE GPUs are of excellent quality), but the regional availability issue remains to this day as NVIDIA first-party products can only be purchased in North America and select Western EU markets.

Regardless, Titan Xp was faster enough vs. 1080 Ti that it would always be ahead even though it technically was restricted to the blower design and standard power limits. The fully enabled chip with all memory channels present and operating at a higher speed was ultimately too big a gap for virtually all AIB enhancements to bridge.

Hi,
My main point was titanXp wasn't 500.us faster than 1080ti hehe

Hi,
My main point was titanXp wasn't 500.us faster than 1080ti hehe

It was positioned at another segment altogether, beginning with Pascal, they removed the "GeForce GTX" branding from Titan and started to push it as a prosumer-level accelerator that could double down as a gaming flagship. It existed in a limbo serving neither market too well. Titan RTX is still listed as a GPU for "AI, machine learning and creative workflows" on NVIDIA's website, but the fact that we've seen RTX 3090 and 4090 fill its shoes from the gaming side with a complete overhaul of their professional line (Quadro brand dropped, GPUs simply referred to as NVIDIA RTX with an emphasis on feature set from top to bottom) since shows that the branding is very much dead.

best means best and new one is always faster than the predecessor . why are you making shit up? in this context best means exactly what it says. especially on hardware.
You mean in the context of a thread that’s dedicated to a discussion of a video proclaiming the 1080Ti (which wasn’t even the fastest card of its generation) as the “best” GPU of all time (in 2024, mind you)?
Yeah, I don’t think it’s me missing the context here, my friend.

Nah, I disagree. The best GPU is certainly not the fastest one.
im sorry but that makes by definition no sense.

Hi,
Yeah but going by your logic you posted about best is 4090 super duper ti at 1600-2000+-.us would be your best lol
well the 4090 is the best. logical. the fact it needs to get mentioned worries me. its like 1+1

im not your friend. there is no context. its hardware, new one will always be better. end of story. maybe you can say the best of its time. which it was when you forget the titan but that was not really for gaming only.

Did you watch back to the future or something because you're flux compacitoring back and forth in time

Do you understand GPU price/ performance in the same point in time in history ?

Seems not because you switch to nv branding as some sort of reason it barely beat a 1080ti Performance to justify it's stupid price increase :kookoo:
Then go on about series well after either of these gpu hehe

Sure you are. The whole world is my friend, I am gregarious that way. Context is important to any good discussion, precisely so that blanket statements like yours that are effectively not really meaningful can be avoided. Fastest and best aren’t necessarily synonymous here.
And really, “new hardware is always better”? How about, say, the 11900K? Was it definitively better than the 10900K? Or how bout those juicy discussions of the 4060 and 4060Ti where in certain scenarios they manage to lose to their direct predecessors? Or early DDR5 being often slower in games than mature DDR4 with good timings? Doesn’t seem like newer is better necessarily, huh?

I was completely out of the market during that time period, but after 20X0 / 30X0 I have heard a lot of nerdy friends saying "the good ol' days of 1080".
If only the pricing of 3080 was vaguely near its MSRP for its lifetime it would have been the GOAT...

And, forgive this car analogy from a racing game / sport "FaNs" who never owned a car, but while I can say the best car in whatever game would be something like the Chiron, the best car in real world for normies, in practical, for a very crowded area like in my side of the world, would almost always be something humble like the Civic, Corolla, Prius, etc.

Eh, I probably have to put a lot of conditions to make that analogy work.
