I might have put it wrong, I know Windows 8.1 is good, I use it myself.
I meant if it's worth buying it because Windows 10 comes out this year, I thought if I could upgrade to 10 for free.

Window's 8.1 is pretty great, Metro UI sucks, but atleast they have acknowledged that mistake.

Ok guys, I got the Windows 8.1 DVD for my dad, tried to install and getting the following:
"An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart." :banghead:

What I did:
Formatted the SSD on my laptop (NTFS)
Only have the formatted SSD connected
The drive is set to AHCI mode in the BIOS
First boot device is CD-ROM

What to do next :confused:

Ok found the problem, I had to set disk mode to IDE....
It is an old DVD drive thats installed.

But how would this affect the speed of the SSD?

what's NOT to like or be worth it ?

I was skeptical at first, having W7 Pro on all my systems (4) and getting it extremely fine-tuned to just the way I wanted it about 1.5 years ago, but finally took the plunge and installed it about 2 weeks ago on my desktop machine.

And not to disappoint, just like all other versions before it, it STILL requires buttloads of updates & restarts but overall it is coming along nicely (after I found Classic Shell) and it's a keeper IMHO

Now if I can just get it to finish downloading the 8.1 update sucessfully, I will be really, really, really happy

And TO P4-630:
IDE mode on an SSD ? YUCKY, SUCKY & TRIPLE DUCKY :banghead:

you will NOT be happy !

Preparing the installation is at 10% now for about an hour or so. The hdd light keeps flashing and I can still move the mouse. Does it take ages to install windows 8.1 on ssd in ide mode or went something wrong? Stays at 10%

I did not disconnect the speakers and the lan cable. Could this cause the problem that it stays at 10% for about an hour?

just ask it could be from the cable or the ports where you plug the ssd

Ok so I got an error code: 0x80070017, the installation files were corrupt.
After a while I took the DVD out and I found it had some fine glue lines on it, I carefully removed them and Windows 8.1 is installed now.

In desktop now downloading updates.

I don't think it's worth it my self, it pretty much depends on what he uses the system for too. My other system runs Vista and boots just as W7\8 or 10 does so if that's the only reason then no.

However depending on the vista drivers for the system could make issue's on a slower start up but just saying it's just money out the window so to speak.

I would wait until win10 is out and get that as win8 is near being replaced by it anyways.

Okay, after cleaning the glue off the DVD did you try installing it under AHCI?

If your still on IDE, here is a way to change to AHCI after you have it installed:

Press Ctrl + X and select Command Prompt (A)dmin from the menu and then enter the following command:
bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal

Reboot and then enter the BIOS (typically press F1, F2, F10 or Delete)
Change the SATA drive setting to AHCI and exit the BIOS save settings.

Windows will boot into Safe Mode.

Open an Administrator Command Prompt again and enter the following command to disable Safe Mode boot:
bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot

Reboot

I have personally done this a few times in the last year or so and it has worked every time. :toast:

I used it once on a Windows 7 machine and it worked the same. Don't know if it would work in Vista. I guess it depends on if Vista has the same command line attributes.

At this point in time it is not worth upgrading to windows 8.1 . Vista (with sp2) may not be the best windows, but it is not completely useless as advocated by some. Windows 10 is just around the corner , and since you have not upgraded earlier wait for the first reviews and then decide what to get.

I don't see why it wouldn't. It is fine if you install the operating system under IDE, but then run the command prompt. It will change it from IDE to AHCI.

How does it compare with a 7200rpm drive?

The only downside I found under "safely remove hardware", there is a new option: I could now "safely remove" the SSD..... :confused:

So I warned my dad about this that he must NOT "safely remove" the SSD...

No need for commands in windows?

I did not really notice a difference either from IDE to AHCI when booting up and using windows,
maybe I would only notice it in a benchmark.

Do the same thing, only when you enter the BIOS change it to IDE.

For safety reasons I have reverted it back to IDE, I did not notice a difference when booting up or using standard apps anyway.
And my dad does not need to load games anyway

However there was one small other thing, it has a HD 4870 installed and the latest driver was only for Windows 8! No driver for Windows 8.1!
I installed the driver package , all went well except the actual display driver itself, it failed to install....
Since my dad is not into gaming, it works fine for the usual office stuff.
