I have a dated IDE drive and I have a new Sata drive both 80 gigs and also a new samsung DVD-RW drive. When I have the SATA and the ATA connected it boots up properly recognizes the new drives but does not make a drive partition, I tried formatting the new drive but it doesn't give me an option in the bios. Also when I have just the IDE(master) and the DVD(slave) drive connected it stops for awhile and thinks and then tell me to choose a drive to boot off of in the DOS screen, the same occurs when I have all three connected.....

My question is how do I set up the jumpers so it will recognize each drive/device and boot properly I have been doing some searches but no cigar. I basically want my IDE as my primary and the Sata as secondary drive. I know you can mix and match IDE and SATA but I have not been successful....

oh the wonders of building a new system:banghead:

ide master and sata master have nothing to do with it, if u changed any jumpers put everything back to master, they are not related in anyway

Well in reference to the the IDE devices....my hardrive and my DVD drive...the SATA didn't even have jumpers so I figured as much....my main issue is that they are bumping heads at boot up...I need them not to.

well u set the ur primary boot device for primary... and put the sata for secondary in ur bios. ur hard drive and cd drive arnt connected to the same ide cable are they? thats not good if they are... u want to connect them each to different cable for optimal hard drive performance and so the hard drive wont messup
Edit: woops forgot no sata master

There are no master for SATA drives. They're all considered Master drives.

yeah I do have them on the same cable, that why I wanted the DVD drive as a slave, I'm going to try diff cables to see how it works out

There is usually a diagram on PATA drives and CD Drives that indicates what jumpers go where to set Master/Slave. Like others have said SATA drives should be set to go from the factory without any jumper changes (if yours even has jumpers).

Usually you can find the jumper info printed on the label on the PATA/CD drive and sometimes it is embossed into a metal/plastic part near the jumpers. If not try the manufactures web site for documentation.

One thing to note is if you will move the PATA and CD drive to different channels they may no longer need to be jumpered as Master. If I recall correctly my WD IDE drive would not be recognized if I had it set to Master if it was the only drive on the chain. So thats something to pay attention to.

Does your SATA work? Does windows detect it and you can partition/format it?
