No, in the list awaiting you, click on the "learn more" or something like that. It opens up web page explaining the update. So far, MS is still very upfront on those pages telling you which ones you will bendover for. It takes about a minute per update...and time well spent if you object to their control tactics.

Sometimes there is no info available yet on the patch tuesday, then I'll wait a few days and once the info is there, then I'll decide if I want to hide the update or not.

Who needs the Start Menu anyways. Keyboard shortcuts and search is all you need to navigate around.

If I was made to use Win 10 at work I'd have no choice but to learn shortcuts and I'd probably switch at home. The fact that shortcuts are popular in Win 10 reaffirms the fact they've failed miserably at redesigning a GUI.

That's like me asking why you "need" your favorite color. No, it's your favorite color because you like it.

In the same way, I like a start menu, it's my preference. Alot of people feel the same way. No need to question people's preferences.

That's how I've been navigating through WIn7 as well. The name implies it already: short = quicker/higher productivity. Using the mouse to navigate around and having to follow a predefined path rigorously
(fixed UI) is not exactly what I consider efficient workflow.

Having designed user interfaces for over a decade, first impressions are pretty important. I won't argue shortcuts are faster, but that only happens when you're behind the keyboard for long periods of time. Q: How do you find a shortcut? A: Google it. Q: How do you find it the second time when you can't find the same command a week later? A: Google it (if you haven't printed out a shortcut sheet and taped it to your monitor.)

I used to like it as well. Back in the days of XP and former times. But when Microsoft introduced the search function I slowly moved away from it. I don't want to question people's preferences... I just wanted to show an alternative.

If you've ever used AutoCAD day in and day out, you can surely appreciate shortcuts. I'm not saying your wrong, I just think that a mainstream OS shouldn't require you to move your mouse all over the screen to find hidden options and scroll bars.

I get that. :) We're all aware of the alternative. And for many of us, it's like @Sasqui pointed out above...way too much looking up or referring to a cheat sheet. For me, mouse and menu is extremely fast. I'm sure it's that way for quite a few people.

They probably did this because these are options for more "experienced" users and MS wanted to keep things simple in order to not overwhelm the average/not so tech savvy user.

Windows 10 w/ ClassicShell for the start menu is not all that different from Windows 7. After using Win8 and now Win10 for the past couple years, I actually don't like Windows 7. I've gotten use to the benefits of Win8/10, and miss them in 7.

I get that. :) We're all aware of the alternative. And for many of us, it's like @Sasqui pointed out above...way too much looking up or referring to a cheat sheet. For me, mouse and menu is extremely fast. I'm sure it's that way for quite a few people.
Sometimes I resort to mouse and UI usage as well. When I'm in "single hand mode" (while eating or being lazy) I make use of the shortcuts on my rocketbar dock or happily use the Windows UI.
But I couldn't be bothered to do so all the time since I work 40h+ in front of a pc. It would put much more strain on my right wrist and I wouldn't be as procutive.
But if you don't spend so much time in front of a pc I guess it's hard to remember keyboard shortcuts and would take quite some time to get accustomed to it...

They probably did this because these are options for more "experienced" users and MS wanted to keep things simple in order to not overwhelm the average/not so tech savvy user.

Sheer number of commands too. The brilliant thing they did early on is make the space bar the enter key, which also repeats the last command. Ironically, the most commonly used command is the one that was last used... smack that spacebar.

Why so difficult, just don't install it lol!! :p
Just do the updates manually!
I wouldn't exactly call killing a process and doing some minor registry edits "difficult" :toast:

Edit: There's still a tiny possibility you fuck up eventually when doing updates manually.

I already upgraded to Win 10 on all my machines (I seem to be one of the few that likes Win10).

But to save myself from all the "hassle" that the machine from my parents-in-law would of surely caused, I prefer the surefire way

I actually consider the registry edits easier and less hassle than doing manual updates...

I like automatic updates, I don't like having to sift through updates every month needing to research what each one does. That sounds like more hassle to me.

Meh, win10 isn't that bad. I still prefer 7 though, as an avid desktop user and a keen eye for aesthetics.
I do like the new start menu, an improvement over the old one, at least imo.

I still don't understand why ms dumbed down the looks of the desktop interface, nowadays hardware has no problems whatsoever with aero and all bells and whistles.

As for gwxcontrol, just run it once and check all the boxes and you will never be bothered again by upgrades.
Run it again and you can disable what you disabled (huh yeah I know lol).
In win10 you can use spybotantibeacon, which you can run in the background, or as a zip file exe, for a one time use.
They edit the registry with harmless values, ensuring your pc will remain your pc.

I think it's to get a uniform look across all devices which everyone recognizes to help promote the brand and increase market share. Of course, this does nothing for us desktop users. :ohwell:
