My 4850 is not working.

Hey folks,

I have a problem since yesterday with my display. As I turned on my PC there was not display but the other fans are running so power is ok. The only strange thing I noticed the two leds are constantly on.

I googled about this and it says it could be Over Temp protection or 12V rail fault.

My PSU is Cooler Master Real power Pro 650W. So this PSU must driving the card right and it has been doing for last 2 years.

So if it is Over Temp protection how could I manage to run my VGA again?

Mine did that and the PSU went bad. Your PSU is of much higher quality than the one I had, so it could be something else.

Yeah I don't think the cpu is faulty, Anybody knows how I can check my PSU's 12V rail? I wish I would have a spare VGA. Things would have been more clear then.

cooler master dont make great PSU's, dont rule it out.

its silly logic to say 'its been working fine for two years!' that tends to be what happens. they work fine, then they break...

use a multimeter and measure the 12V rail into the PCI-E power of the card.

multimeter. red wire to yellow wire on PCI-E connector. black wire to a ground on your PSU. measure.

Remove the card from the mobo. Switch to onboard grahpics and give it a go. If it works, its your HD4850. I dont think its the PSU because even a 400W PSU should be more than enough to power up your rig.

sigh, a 300W PSU could run his system... if it WORKED.

you could have a 10,000W PSU and it wont mean squat, if it the damn things broken.

Try clearing the CMOS. Remove the mobo battery as well and fix it back.

Lol yeah 300W could run his system. :laugh:

But if his PSU was bust, the PC wouldn't have started up. But can never say, it might be the PSU, but its best to be 100% sure its not the VGA.

What do you say, is PSU good?

The other thing is I plugged my friend's 7600 GS but that card too did not display anything.

I am assuming a bad motherboard.

if your getting over temp, possibly. Try another monitor aswell.

I think if it was monitor then there won't be leds indication. I have blew all the dust out of my PC. So I don't think this would be the factor. But we can't rule this out. If this is over temp then what should we do?

12.20 is a bit high, IMO. monitor it more closely, not just a brief reading. if it has multiple rails, then check various connectors (the main ATX one to the mobo, the one to the CPU aux power, and all connectors to the video card)

as i said above too, check to see if it moves at all.

Yeah 12.20 is bit high i think so too, I checked the 4 pin connector on motherboard and I check 24 pin power cable too. All voltages are normal like 4.98 for 5 V and 3.38 for 3.3 V. 12V reading is same on different connectors.

if its at 12.20 and its not moving much, then odds are the PSU is fine. if its bouncing all over the place (12.05 to 12.20 to 12.25 and so on) then its not a good thing.

at this stage, sounds like the card is bad/overheating.

try the card in another Known good machine with a different power supply and see if it does the same thing.

People if we suppose the PSU is fine and card is fine too then why we are not focusing on Motherboard. Because Board can also go bad and its not giving a beep for errors. If the card would have gone bad the Mobo should tell this. As it does in normal power on self test or memory errors.

the lights wont come on the video card, if its the mobo at fault.

We are trying to isolate the issue by removing the card out of the board, if you test it in another machine and it doesn't have the issues you are currently now, well then it is obviously your motherboard or another plugin board is a POS, and should be replaced immediately. In 2002 I was having issues with a new board and video card, low and behold a year later I found the motherboard to be the POS because I dropped the video card into a MSI K7N2 Delta-L and it worked right out of the box. That Asus board I had to get a bios update, newer drivers, change a video cache mode, disable windows automatic restarts and VPU recovery just to be stable at AGP 8X speed.

Mates thank you to all for contributing in this thread. The Motherboard was at fault, so replaced it with MSI 785GTM-E45. I wanted to get Asus M4A785-M but AMD motherboards are rare entities here in Pakistan. Thank you again and Admins can lock this thread.
