ok. but the beauty of having a 8800GS is that you overclock it. i was getting 25 to 30fps on very high Crysis at 1280*1200 res.

For testing purposes it's highly recommended to drop the clock speed to check if that's causing the crashes. What kind of temps is it putting out, under load?

My 8800gs has issues going above 1728 shaders. Not sure if your card would be close to that as well.

but shaders dont overheat the card. do they? in rivatuner. when i select detect now it detects the shader clock up to 2056mhz and core up to 825mhz. i tried to set the shaders to 1900mhz and now 1800mhz. is it too much? what kind of issues u get? what are your clocks now? did u get reboots or what?

how many more frame rate you think you would get if you go from 1700mhz shaders to 1800mhz or 1900mhz and from 700mhz core to 800mhz and 1800mhz memory to 2000mhz? huge frame rate gain or just maybe 2 or 3 fps??? i want to know if its worth it.

My current clocks are 715 core 998 memory and 1728 shaders(locks in at 1730) past that in shaders i start getting artifacts. Your actual shader is 1782 as nvidia shaders move in intervals of 54. Increasing shader speed doesn't really increase temperature but it can make your card less stable.

Edit: The shader speed will increase some frames but they really won't be all that noticeable, again the 54 point intervals for shader. 1728 1782 1836 I'll be surprised if your card can dot he 1836 honestly.

what is your power supply? how much amps does it have on full load?

I've not had any restart or blue screens caused by the video card yet.

Note I'm also running old drivers as well

Honestly you won't see even a 2-3 FPS change in crysis by adjusting your shaders a whole 54 mhz. I'm willing to best the shaders may be causing your issues. Easiest way to find out is to revert to stock clocks and run ati tool or crysis for a bit and to see if you have any errors or crashes still occuring.

Did you set your oc without stress testing it first other than crysis? Any ATiTool or something similar?

Believe it does 2 12v rails at 18a.

thanks mate. here is my PSU specification. you can take a look and compare it to your PSU.
http://www.acbel.com/PDF/P_PC/ps2_550W_gold.pdf
is it good? look at the 12V rails. it has 3 12V rails. how does it compare to your PSU? which one is better? I have core 2 duo CPU e4500 overclocked to 2.98mhz. 2gb of ram and 2 hard drives.
you think that PSU should be enough for me ?? thanks.

we still need some info.
does it restart in every game, or only in massive graphics ones (like crysis) ?
does it restart only after few minutes of playing the game ?

if it restart only after few minutes of intensive graphic game I'd suspect either a temperature problem or PSU problem. if this is the case I think you can rule out a driver issue.
it can be either the temperature of the graphic card or the temperature of the CPU.

Have you tested with your gfx card at stock speeds yet? That will help to diagnose the problem.

i sure you have no problem with psu it is good, just like my friend dan say try without overclock and check the ram too, and do you have some test programs see the temperature of mobo , card , cpu . psu , use pc wizard or sandra for check

just FYI threadstarter i have an evga 8800GS. stock clock is 550/1375/800 and i have it OC'd to 685/1745/1025. the card is rated for a "minimum recommended" PS of 400w with 22 amps on the 12 volt rail. i have a 300w PS with 18 amps on the 12 volt rail. my system has never shut down while gaming or anything else.

if you have a quality PS check your connections, wiring, airflow in the case, etc. eliminate all other possible causes. if you have a spare vid card around (the old one, maybe?) pop that in and see whats up

changing a PS is easy and fairly cheap, of course. just would hate to see you do it and still have the problem. i know nvidia drivers and Vista have a few known issues, but idk if they could make your computer reboot :'(

anyway just my two cents. reports from around the web show many people run their midrange cards on lesser PS's then recommended no problem. i know i do :)

rest of my specs are below my avatar

i know you have been told psu, psu, psu. without actually having your pc infront of me to troubleshoot, we are all just speculating.

whenever someone brings a pc in to me that is doing "wierd" things, eg. reboot, freezing, blue screening, blackscreening. the first thing i do is look at the psu. if it is a no-name brand, then itry the rig out with a different psu. 80% of the time that fixes the problem, if not start looking at driver conflicts.

the moral of the story is a too weak/dieing psu can cause all sorts of strangeness to happen to a pc. alot of them dont even seen to be power issues. also remember, when psu's do kick the bucket and die, they usually dont go alone. anything and everything can die when the psu goes.

ok now i'm getting nervous :(

sometimes people tell me "upgrade your psu" but idk why i would it works fine and my system isn't too demanding

its that last part about "anything and everything" dying with them. like a heart attack for the PC.

my Super Budget Gamer Thing is going out like Tim Russert :'(

my PS doesn't have a brand label on it but the friend who gave it to me took it out of his old PS and swore its solid. so far...so good

but i guess i need to cross my fingers a little

however i could get a 550w PS with 30amps, etc....and have problems like this guy. maybe. or i can keep what i have and be fine. idk i don't want to buy another PS until i upgrade my vid card again. but....maybe i will. in a bit of time.....

PsychoTronn: im on windows xp. are there any versions for xp? I used Nvidia GeoForms screensaver demo to stress test my GPU. i tried it for 35 minutes and it was running ok after i reduced the clocks a little bit. right now my core clock is at 765mhz, 1800mhz shader and 1022 mhz memory. I can use Gigabyte overclocking tool to increase the voltage of the gpu to make it more stable. do u think its safe?? my Gigabyte 8800gs came with an aftermarket Zalman heatsink but doesnt have memory heatsink. i have 4 memory heatsinks at home. i can use them to cover 4 out of 6 memory chips to make them cooler. is it a good idea? thanks :D.

nope, sorry i don't think those drivers are around for XP. just use the latest offered for XP. should be fine.

so far as increasing voltages? meh....i wouldn't touch it. i mean it should be ok, but whether or not it will solve your problem, who knows? i'm doubting it

going over the thread i don't see if you've mentioned your temps? check those, adjust overclock until stable, check / change drivers, test, test, test. you know the drill. the more you do the less you'll have to guess about where the problem lies

so far as the 8800GS not having enough "headroom" for overclocking.....a look around the web shows different as they're actually some of the best cards around for it. G92 family chipset....so it'll overclock. however, your core clock is a bit high for this card imo....although i have seen the XFX model go higher and be stable

you're gaming at 1280X whatever res i see. so you need not overclock this card to death. if you're trying to play Crysis on "very high" as one of your posts states....you can overclock this card 'til the end of time and performance is still going to hit a wall at some point. its Crysis...i wouldn't even think to get playable framerates on Very High with this level card. hell cards costing 3 and 4 times as much with beefier specs barely can!

stick with high in Crysis and do your best with it. don't kill your card trying to run Crysis better. Crysis will run....like it runs. otherwise....get another card :)

thanks. im happy with my performance for crysis. i can play very high without any tweaks at 1280*1200 resolution comfortably. its very playable. i can even play at my max resolution which is 1600*1200 but the performance goes down to 16 or 17 fps which is a bit annoying.
overall 8800GS is a nice card. it performs like a high end card. I am playing Mass Effect at max setting on my 1600*1200 res and can get 40fps and above. so far i can max out every game even crysis :). im happy. i just want to get the most out of my card :p. i am sure at these clock speeds 8800gs is faster than a 9600gt now. and not too far away from 8800GT. overall im happy :p. and did u try that physics driver nvidia just released???
my gpu temp never gone above 70 or 80. is there any tool so i can see my temp at the top of the screen while playing a game?? like fraps.

i think rebooting has to do with very high core and memory clock. because when i reduced the clocks it didnt reboot during the stress test. i got my core to 765mhz, 1902mhz shader and 1030mhz memory. is it a good clock? would you get any performance increase from 765mhz to 800mhz?
