I'm thinking about getting rid of my eVGA 780i and switching to an Intel based motherboard.

I'm looking for:

Good at Overclocking.
DDR2 Prefered(DDR3 is just to expensive, but I'll go that route if I have to)
Needs to be a decent price. I'm not cheap, but I won't put out over $250 for a motherboard.

I was thinking the ASUS P5E Deluxe X48 motherboard, but I don't know much about it and wanted your opinions.

I was also thinking about the ASUS P5Q Deluxe or P5Q3 Deluxe, which are a little cheaper(I like that), but I don't know if I will be losing overclocking performance(I don't like that). So would stepping down to the P45 chipset boards really cost me that much in overclocking?

I prefer ASUS, yes, but I'm not opposed to a good alternative from another company.

The big difference between the two is the crossfire set up, which seemingly doesn't apply to you since you're running an NVidia card. There are a few people with the P5Q3 DLX here who can tell more about them, but the P45 chipset is an evolution of the P35 chipset which generally clock better than the X38/48 chipsets. There is a review of the P5Q3 DLX on XS where someone got 4 different boards to go over 600FSB, were as some X38/48 chipsets have a FSB limit around 475 (can't say for sure if the ones you are looking at do, but just something you would want to know).

Good suggestion from Lepra, DFI makes excellent overclocking boards, just some times have some complicated BIOS. Also save some $ if you do go DFI and get the LP DK P35.

Yeah, I am thinking that the P45 is definately out of the question now. I was planning on switching to ATi video cards and doing crossfire, which seems to take a hit from the P45 x8/x8 configuration. I wasn't aware of the P45's x8/x8 configuration when I made this thread.

I don't mind a lower FSB limit, as I am not looking to push any of my processors that hard. I doubt I will see much over 400FSB regardless of the board I use.

However, I am still up in the air on the whole thing. I might just keep my current setup and drop another 9800GTX in if the prices keep falling like they are.

From what I know, even a 3870x2 won't be affected by the 8x/8x crossfire set up.

x8/x8 makes no difference currently with any cards

Actually when I look at their numbers it is closer to a 20% hit, and when you exclude the synthetic benchmarks(which I really couldn't care less about) it is over 20%. I've always found tweaktown to have pretty decent reviews.

I think we are getting into the day and age where x8/x8 isn't enough, and the 4870's will just push that point even further. I'd like to keep this motherboard for a while(for a change) and I think I would rather spend the money on an x38/x48 and get the full x16/x16 now and not have to worry about it later.

I know right now, the performance difference will most likely be totally unnoticeable, but how long will that be true? That is what I am worried about.
