Sauerbraten for those that don't already know, is a competitive opensoure 1st & 3rd Person Shooter title that DOESN't use the Quake 3 engine. It uses the Cube 2 engine which has been designed from the ground up by the game's developers. However, the gameplay is very Quake and UT feeling particularly in multiplayer.
It's fast paced and the newest version looks better than ever. Most opensource shooters look like pretty bad, but Sauer is quite different in this respect.
Eye Candy List:
Parallax Normal Mapping (Really Nice Bump Mapping)
Static and Dynamic Lighting
Stencil Shadow System
Particle Effects
Physics System
Advanced Water with Caustic Lighting
Automatic Grass System (Think Oblivion Grass)
and more...
For the devolpers on here you should know Sauer is extremly easy to add content and create maps for. Simply press "E" in singleplayer or in Co-Op Edit (yes, I did just say multiplayer map making) and you can edit everything around you. The menu system will help you get started making new blank maps in any size you want, but you will find yourself wanting to use the terminal more as time goes on.
You can't get Sauerbraten from: http://sauerbraten.org/ Enjoy!
**Note: The screenshots on their website don't do the current version justice as they're from several version ago. I manged to get a screenshot uploaded to TPU check it out. My advice, just give it a try and see how much you like it.
