New Supercomputer Announced to Reach About 150 Petaflops

The Oak Ridge Summit may have the potential to perform150 quadrillion FLOPS per second consistently. The fastest supercomputer right now is China's Tianhe-2 which delivers 55 petaflops. Amazing!

If Berkley wants to pay for it, they can have it (well, one of them anyway).

I really don't get why they need a dedicated supercomputer for the nuclear stockpile and they update it every few years. Seems like a major waste of tax dollars to me.

From what little I understand of it, in order to do any work in quantum chromodynamics, you need massive computing power. And even then, you have to impose a lot of approximations and limits - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_chromodynamics#Methods

But what I meant is that LLNL has had the world's top 10 supercomputers for decades and they always eventually replace it with something faster every few years. What warrants spending millions every few years? If it is inadequate everytime, then why don't they make one that can wholly satisfy the job and only replace it when they can't get anymore parts for it? If the math they used 20 years ago worked, why can't they keep using the same?

I can understand why ORNL would be on a rapid update schedule (because science) but LLNL has a static, if not diminishing (because of reducing the nuclear stockpile) workload so it shouldn't be rapidly replaced like it is.

LLNL just stinks of government corruption and has for a long time.

I certainly hope so. Every time someone mentions the LLNL supercomputer though, it is always in the context of the nuclear stockpile.
