Damn, I wish I could have purchased my 7950s for $269 (I see the one for $200, but buying a proper cooler for it costs $80 anyway). I have to RMA my GB Windforce now after it halfway crapped out. :(

This reminds me a lot of the end of the 6xxx era when I bought a factory unlocked Sapphire 6950 for ~$269 in October 2011. Since the 7 series cards are roughly a year and a half old, I wouldn't be surprised if we see something new soon from AMD.

true on the cooler but the big bonus here is its a reference card means voltage control is intact and shouldnt be as problematic as the aftermarket versions can be. also no boost bios etc so theres far more win than fail here.

I actually haven't had any issues with the Boost firmwares. All three of my cards stay at their respective overclocked speeds in Afterburner under high load with constant voltage enforced and +20% power limit. My reference MSI 7970 actually became voltage locked with a newer firmware, and I just stuck with it since the newer firmware raised the voltage and the OC limit from 1125 to 1200MHz and I got 1150/1650 without any trouble.
