Hello all,

My college just released the specs for this year's laptop and I'm now trying to decide what I'll do with my desktop.

How will a "NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M with 512 MB of dedicated video memory" compare to my NVidia 7600GT w/ 256MB DDR3?

I don't need some super detailed review of all the tech. simply: better, as good, or worse?

Thanks all
David

eh, you don't really compare those 2 types of cards as one is for business and workstation use, the other gaming. the 770m isn't meant for gaming so to compare the 2 just isn't logical.

Though the 770m could be refered to at the Geforce 8600m, being the workstation variant i would expect it's performance to be lower than your 7600GT gaming wise. the 770m isn't meant for gaming so to compare the 2 just isn't logical.

agree, depend on what you need , work or games

Even in games that Quadro is a lot faster. It has 32 shaders so is equal to a 8600. If you want you can use Geforce drivers.

you right drivers , even geforce can run as quadro , but sometimes you need programs like riva tuner , i see guys run 8800gts g80 as quadro 4600 using quadro drivers , but there is one more thing which with quadro run as geforece you lose the games support drivers

Interesting. So there is no hardware difference between work and gaming cards, just the drivers?

BTW, I'm an avid Linux user and one large reason for that is the multiple desktops feature. When I first downloaded the driver for my 7600GT (for windows) it let me set up multiple desktops. Will this Quadro's driver let me do that again finally?

Anyway, as for the performance of the card: the most graphics intensive game I own is Oblivion IV. Will a computer with a T9600, 4GB DDR2 800, 7200 rpm drive, and the above quadro video card (they didn't specify XP or Vista, 32 or 64 bit) play Oblivion?

Thanks for the replies already!

it'll play it, though probly at 1280x1024 low-med settings, or 1024x768 med settings. ah Oblivion, was so much like crysis when it was first released, dragging most systems to the floor.

everything in your system spec, about 370 roughly. without your screen about 270.
I put together this build rather quick and it would outperform your build by a good bit and it's only 370
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=11556146
your system, with lower performance and being used i can only recon a max value of 300, but $250-280 is what i thk you could expect if the buyer is knowledgable. with your monitor, since it's still good it's worth probly 100 bucks. so 370 is what i would aim at if i were selling your entire desktop system.

thanks. that sucks. i hate that part of the computer industry. and i paid $600 for this thing. lol. oh well. that price seems to agree with my findings on craigslist so i guess i'll aim for $300 (the monitor goes with me to college).

that's a great budget system btw! good finds!

yea you hate it lol, year and a half ago i built the same system you see in my rig only with 8800GT SLI for 1,739 bucks. though SLI never worked and both cards ended up dying(too much oc on one, dunno bout the other) and now my system even with those cards would only be worth ~800 bucks. gotta luv how tech progresses makin what we bought less than half it's price

and yea, stick around here a while you'll learn just bout all the hardware there is on the market and what the best builds for a certain price are, plus i build a good bit for my friends and whatnot and they're usually on $350-800 budgets.
