Nvidia to revive dual GPU graphics cards?

Nvidia could combat ATI’s forthcoming X2 cards with dual-GPU cards of its own.

Nvidia has been rumoured to be reviving the idea of dual-GPU cards for some time, but is there actually a new GeForce 7950 GX2-style DX10 card in the works, now that ATI has announced its dual-GPU X2 cards? We decided to put the question to Nvidia.

‘Hang on a minute, haven’t we already done that?’ said Nvidia’s product PR manager for Northern Europe, Adam Foat, when asked about the possibility of new dual-GPU Nvidia cards. We pointed out that Nvidia wasn’t doing it any more, to which Foat replied: ‘Who says?’

‘That’s our last generation product,’ said Foat, ‘so without me going into too much detail, you know how Nvidia works. We know when we want to launch a product, and we execute when that product comes out, and we’ve done that successfully now for the last couple of years… the 7950 GX2 was a very successful card and we’ve got the technology, you know that, we don’t have to spell it out.’

So why is Nvidia being so secretive about it, while ATI is proudly telling everyone about its forthcoming X2 cards? ‘Just because you don’t hear anything about what we have coming, that doesn’t mean we’re not doing anything,’ says Foat. ‘There are other companies out there that shout from the rooftops about what they’re doing, and what they’ve got coming in the future. We’ve made the mistake in the past where we’ve not rested on our laurels, as it were, but we’ve not got the product 100 per cent right, and you know we’re not going to make that mistake again.’

He has a point – nobody wants to see the disaster that was Quad SLI with the original GeForce 7900 GX2 cards again. Of course, ever the master of PR, Nvidia hasn’t said anything concrete here, but it hasn’t been a denial either, and the hints have been strong enough for it to look very much like Nvidia could be bringing out another dual-GPU card this year. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Possibly. I doubt it for a while though, since they only just announced three-way SLI.

I'd probably love all this crazy multi-gpu shiz... if it was multi-monitor friendly. From what I've read both SLI and CrossFire need to be turned off for when you want to use the other ports.

Whole reason I have an 8600GTS and 6600GT (my old card) instead of two 8600GTS's. No way am I going to turn on/off SLI before/after every game. It's better than the old days when you needed to reboot, but still not acceptable IMO.

Isnt this sort of old news since we have had the pricing thread and the thread that states there are waterblocks made for this already here?

This is what I came up with here using our search feature!

Great, another thrown-together dual PCB card with loud, inadequate cooling relying on Nvidia's still buggy SLI solution. Where can I sign up? IMO, both GX2s were disasters from an innovation standpoint, they didn't bring anything new, Nvidia just stuck 2 PCBs together and called it a day.

i have only 1 question...
what game will use (if true) the 6 graphic card?
wonder if i got 6 8800GTS 512...
but i think, these things are going to... Who got the best, who got more points in 3dmark (or any other test program)...
Intel at these times says: overclock your cpu
nvidia says: get more cards, get more points

i bought an e6750, overclocked it to 3,5ghz with stock cooler, but NOTHING use it on 100% either on 60%!
bought 8800GT 512, its cool, but only 1 game use it fully = crysis
and i think, crysis is a good game, and its more than just a benchmark "game", but i still say, crysis is still to test your PC.

peace

Well, I notice that you have a 1024x768 LCD in your specs. Probably could have gotten an HD3850 256MB and not known the difference :D

Someone with this hypothetical Sex-SLI could run 2560x1600 at a pretty high AA level.

multi gpu or cpu is all about the fact its become increasingly more difficult to design and produce better more powerfull chips..

die shrinking and ganging the old stuff up is cheaper.. they only get away with it for so long thow.. then the real problems start..

what comes after quad core cpus for example.. ????

I'd buy ATI's dual GPU b4 nvidia's not because i like AMD\ATI it's because how badly nvidia supported the 7950 x2.

AMD/ATI is very good at making 'announcements' as it's seen that each time they did that, they fared well at the stock-exchange. On the other hand, NVidia's being tight-lipped isn't indicative of it being secretive. There's no point making announcements aka. tall claims because if you can't live upto your word, people start hating you. That said, NVidia made its highle informal jit about the GeForce 9800 GX2 some time ago, possible to fall back on this tradition when people started getting interested in the ATI R680, they did that to just tell people "hey we're working on something like that too, don't name your piggy-banks after the R680, make a choice when both the R680 and the 9800 GX2 come out". The 7900 GX2 wasn't a failed product at all. It did work in SLI under Windows XP, it was priced over the X1950 XTX but performed way way better. The 7900 GX2 failed only at not being able to do SLI under Windows Vista and that there was a very tiny time-gap between this and the Geforce 8800 GTS/GTX. The G80 launch more or less cannibalised the 7950 GX2. So there's nothing for NV to "revive" as such.

Well either i will not buy i'm waiting for the R700 now as it's pointless replacing the R600.. I'm never been impressed with SLI or CF.

The ability to have multiple AGP slots was enabled in (I believe) the AGP 3.0 spec. No motherboards that I know of took advantage of this though...

This is not to say that there haven't been dual AGP boards, they just never made it out of the lab (Micron and their Samurai DDR chipset based boards).

I remember reading about people having tons of problems with the 7900GX2, and how there was next to no driver support and only one card was used more than half the time. I would call that a failure. The 7950GX2 though, was much better because it actually worked, but it was still a piece of crap IMO because it was nothing new, and SLI support still sucked. I've also read about numerous overheating problems because the coolers were tiny and the bottom one was practically touching the top card. At least ATI's multi-GPU idea allows decent cooling because it's 2 chips on 1 board, as opposed to 2 boards screwed together.
