OC a H97 problems (solved)

Here's the deal. Ive been trying to overclock this G3258 on a ASRock Fatal1ty H97 Performance motherboard. The multiplier is unlocked and it has some preset OC settings. The problem is the CPUv core is locked at .980v so the highest I can achieve is 3.6 Ghz

If I change the VCore it does nothing
I can change the Vcore Override Voltage and set it to the highest I can get 1.08v

The other thing I notice is the voltage never fluctuates

I though maybe I'm missing something

i don't think it will do much, AsRock don't speak about OC settings, but with Bios 1.40 if you haven't updated it jetster try it, it gives support for the G3258 cpu.

I think part of the problem could be the board itself. should of went with the MSI H97 instead. Ive heard a fair bit of negative feedback regarding ASrock boards as well as experienced a little of it myself with friends builds.

If youre having overclocking problems i feel sorry for you son, i got X99 problems but a H97 aint one

H series boards are quite limited with overclocking in the first place. Its like bringing a knife to a gun fight.

Maybe so but there were custom bios's that 'unlocked' overclocking options

Yes I has the most resent BIOS. Its a dual BIOS also so I tried both 1.1 and 1.4. The later adds some automatic overclocks settings but they BSOD when Windows loads. The board was a review board so that's why the H97. Just trying to get everything out of it I can. Its for a friend that plays WOW. Also its on my test bench with a TX650 so powers not an issue. It has a ton of settings I'm just not that experienced at overclocking other than changing the multiplier and volts

The Offset voltage is the only way I could change the volts

why are you trying to OC on an H97? Sure it can be unlocked too, but why not save the head ache and use a board designed to overclock to begin with?

Because its a free board

You know better. haha The board has all the right specs, nice power phase, 8 pin CPU and its unlocked. I think they just cripple the voltage

Okay found the problem. It was the chip. I finally just took my G3258 out of my HTPC (which was one of the first) and tried it. Was able to get 4.5 @ 1.25v. So its a bad OC chip

I just shocked it that big of difference in chips. Well okay not really a surprise at $60

Sadly it was a bad chip, bcs they are good priced. but i guess it would have been better in a Z chipset board to see if it really is a bad chip or just a bad combo...

Well I ran it in the Z97 board I have at didn't do any better. I was able to put 1.30v to it put it still didn't help. 3.6Ghz was the best.

My G3258 runs at 4.2GHz 1.15v on an MSI B85-G43 Gaming, an official unlocked BIOS came around a few weeks after I got the combo for $100.

I'm kinda stoked its not the H97 Board. I just couldn't get the VCore as high but it will overclock

My chip is fairly average too, I bought a cheap Z97 board with 10 phase power that was cheaper than many H97 boards, it does overclock and will do 4.8gig but needs 1.425V at least so I run it at 4.5gig on 1.3V which really is the upper limit in voltage terms that I am happy with but I never intended keeping it more tha a few months to play with before going quad again,hence why really I went for the Z97 although to be honest I only really surf and play one game which isnt multi threadded so it's more than adequate for my needs.
