I don't mean to speak for any other manufacturer but this doesn;t appear to be a non-reference card design like Wile E points out.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowI...+Toxic+HD+4850+100242TXSR+Video+Card+-+Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowI...+Radeon+HD+4850+H485F512P+Video+Card+-+Retail

I just grabbed another random image. If you compare the two you will see the placement and number of capacitors is identical between the two cards. The Sapphire card also still has the outline of where the stock heatsink would normally be.

As far as concerns from Palit on what other manufacturers are doing... Not really.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&SpeTabStoreType=&Order=BESTMATCH&srchInDesc=

That is a link to all the 1GB 8800GT 1GB parts now available at Newegg. I remember when we came under fire from other manufacturers for making a 1GB version of that card. Immitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Palit leads, others follow. It's just the nature of things and we're ok with that.

Most the time I've picked up a PC PowerPlay Magazine I have seen Pailt beating the more reputable competition when compared.

I just hope Pailt get the idles temperatures down with thier 4xxx series.
But who knows, high idle maybe the nature of the 4xxx series with stock cooling.

The Sapphire I own idles at 72-73deC after long hours of gaming but only reaches 86degC at load.

Despite the high temperatures at idle the performance of the card is satisfactory.

Stock cooling definately.

However my 4870 was idling in the mid-high 40s with the Accelero S1 (must remember to order new heatsinks for when I put my 4870 back in).

they finally have some here http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=019047&cid=999.243.272

Not to be mean Palit Guy, but the frog is well fugly,Why did they choose a frog anyways? Smoke some bad ass Mary J?

Trying to do something different. Most other places have some kind of crazy fearsome animal, robot or something. It's a video card not a rocket launcher.

The frog is also a symbol of prosperity so get a frog and get what you want from your video card.

What can I say...it's marketing...it's all a little hokey.

Having a three horned cephalopod with a bazooka on the box isn't going to make your game run better.

Dude, where can I find one of those:)

I hope AMD lets PALiT do a non-reference design on a HD4k x2 card:rolleyes:
That would be sweet:D

Or GDDR4 on a non-reference design of the HD4850 card.....That would kill

That's not non-reference.

Yes it is. Didn't your mother ever teach you these things?

All statements must be either true, or false, or both. A statement is either true as a whole or completely false. If the card isn't at all different, it's reference. If it is changed at all (like the pcb is changed and the cooler is kept) it's not reference because it's not what they were given to use.

I guess that's only if you think about it obsessively, though. XD

they finally have some here

Sorry, but do you actually decorate your walls with video card boxes and video card coolers? If not, why do you care?

I too found the frog robot unusual too.
But then the name Zotac also makes me think about persciption drugs rather than a GPU.

At then end of the day it comes down to the performance, reliability and customer support for the card doesn't it.

Besides you never see the picture on the GPU anyway since it's upside down in the case.

That about sums it up. lol

When most of us here talk about non-reference, we are referring strictly to the pcb design, not the cooler or clocks.

Palit is a pretty cool company, much respect to anyone that can have a Frog as their erm "mascot"
Unfortunately im in need of a 1GB 4870, and i presume some other company will have it before Palit releases one???

I also like that Gainward finally came to the red side, that's always good, and...not like it matters but they also have some of the sickest decals out there.
