Normally I can fix most any problem myself, but over the past year or so I did a build for a friend which has had very subtle, annoying, problems.

The PC was just built to be a family computer with moderate gaming capabilities last year...

400w Antec PSU
a64 3200+ (939)
1gb 2x512 kingston pc 3200
160gb hd
evga 6600gt (now equipped with zalman vf900)
dfi lanparty ut nf4-d mobo
dvd/cd burner

So far I've replaced the RAM, video board, and PSU. Currently it just 'freezes' up every so often, completely at random, maybe 5 minutes after you startup or hours later, but its just given that it will freeze now at some point. I'm wondering if the fact that I've had to take out his hard drive and scan it for virus' so many times has had some weird affect on windows that would cause this (but i highly doubt that, although its overdue for a wiping...), my other thought was that it may be the mobo, which is why everything else around it has 'gone' at least once. Any help is greatly appreciated, especially for this mystery!

I would say the motherboard myself. It sounds like it's power system isn't giving enough juice to the proper areas.

I was thinking that too, but this mobo is long out of its warranty period... what would be a good s939 mobo to go with, cause this dfi seems like nothing but trouble.

My money's on that Antec PSU as your culprit. The fact that you already replaced it is why you don't suspect it. If you can borrow a known good PSU and just wire it in for test purposes, you can rule it out (or in) as the source of your trouble.

Could be Mobo, or Bad HDD cable, or simply bad mobo drivers or BIOS. Have you updated the MOBO drivers/BIOS? Have you checked Hardware Manager for conflicts? Have you checked I/O for conflicts? Have you/can you try the CPU in another MOBO, it could even be bad? Does it have a sound card, did you disable onboard sound in BIOS? My bet would be a bad MOBO/MOBO drivers/Bios.

I would say motherboard also. If the -exact- same problem exhists with all video, memory, and psu components replaced it's unlikely another failed component would be causing the -exact- same problem.

I'm going to go over to his house within the week here and make sure his bios/drivers are updated. We'll see from there.

Guys try a new PSU... lock ups used to occur frequently until I replaced the PSU on P4Sbeholder.
