Powercolor 290, clock fluctuating widly. Massive FPS lag

Ok so here's my problem. I got 5 Eve Online clients running at the moment all on low settings in windowed mode.

My FPS is extremely low and the GPU clock is moving between 400 and 750mhz (975mhz factory overclock) very quickly. My last PC had no such problem. The problem didn't happen when I first got this PC and has only recently happened and got worse. A game such as Eve Online on low doesn't require a good PC.

Driver version: 14.12 Omega.

CPU is overclocked to 4.1ghz. Ram is sitting at 2400mhz

GPUs sitting at 60c stable. 100% fan speed, activity reported at 100%

1300w PSU. Is my graphics card starved for power somehow and throtling itself?

I closed 3 of the 5 clients, FPS suttering wildly, but smoother picture. Clock still fluctuating wildly also. 2nd screen also experiences lag

I had a lot of problems until I rolled back drivers. I'd try that first

I did a full driver sweep and reinstall. But I think I've found the problem and it's quite odd.

When you set a target temp in CCC the graphics card actually throttles itself to reach that target no matter what. It was set to the default target of 95c (fucking retarded by AMD, but whatever), once it hit 90c it underclocked itself to lower the temp (built is fail safe I assume). So then I set to target 50c with 100% fan speed and it sat stable @ 300mhz. So then I set it to target 70c and boom. Stable 975mhz. Sits around 60-70 degrees with a fan speed between 70 and 100%. This was playing Final Fantasy 13, yet to test it with Eve Online.

So it seems there's a built in throttle to stop overheating (which is normal) but also to throttle the card to reach the set target temp (not so smart).

You tried full screen ?, some games or video cards don't play nice in a 2D window some times.

Another think if your using the latest drivers you could try enabling Virtual Super Resolution and use a higher resolution as this force the clock speed higher.

Dude I fixed it. It was all the temp settings that was cause the underclock and stupid flucuations. Check out this FS I just ran... http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/5660561?

Good to hear, thermal throttling then huh. I did notice that by that benchmark your ram is set too 1066 but maybe that site is wrong ?.

Yes the site is wrong. My ram is set to 2400mhz.

Hmmm odd. Getting dozens of square artifacts coming up all over the screen.Only starts to happen at around 70c but I didn't think that would be such a bad temp to cause artifacting.

Sounds like a memory issue, possible overclocked to high or started to die due to a fault or gotten to hot.

Maybe it time to get in touch with Powercolor.


You try each card on their own and see if the issue persists.
