I set up a pair of WD5000AAKS drives in RAID1 on my X58-T3eH6 and the array keeps on failing for some reason. It detects the drives at boot, but the IRST windows driver (the Intel storage one) reports one of the drives as missing. At the next reboot it will sometimes not show one of the two drives in the RAID detection at POST. Then eventually it evens out, randomly allows me to rebuild the array in windows and the array works until a few reboots later, where it randomly goes splat again.

I thought my OC might be to blame (although it is stable as a rock for a long while now), so I tried at stock settings and I get exactly the same effect. I've RMA'ed the drive that keeps vanishing and it came back as non-faulty and kept on vanishing. I have tried different SATA ports, and I get the same effect.

Do you think my motherboard is going bad? Any other things you think I can try before RMAing the board (which will be a PITA and leave me without a computer for a pretty long while) ?

try swapping out the cables and changes ports.. see if that fixes it.

clean out all dust on the connectors.

I'll try a different set of cables. I already tried different ports and there is no dust in my computer whatsoever!

*sigh*

well at least you're not in a bad position. If a hard drive is failing then you still have the other one, in which i mean that both hard drives store the same data (cos its RAID 1).

While true, if the array keeps on failing at every third reboot keeping it up will be impossible in the long run. Which is annoying as heck.

I uad an issue with a board a long time ago where one of the SATA cables were loose. I wedged some folded paper in the top of the connector to tighten it up, which helped some.

A had a similar problem some years back with a RAID 1+0. It was definately the OC that caused it but I couldn't cure the problem via OC settings. I did get around the issue by shifting the page file to another drive, thereby reducing the RAID workload. Of course, thats a bad way of fixing it. Now I just run RAID 0 and back my data up. That works much better.

This was it. I couldn't believe it, but this was it. When I set up my cable management, I tied up most of the cables in a bundle behind the drive cages and the SATA cables got pulled a bit. Not enough to make them jump out of the SATA ports, but enough for the contact pads to be slightly misplaced and keep on losing contact from time to time - Enough to make the drive controller think the drive went splat and label the array as degraded.

I gave the cables more slack, and the problem is gone with the wind. Of course, I bought an EVGA X58 mobo while I was at it...guess I'll just have a spare now. Or I'll get that 980X I've been thinking about and sell my Q9650 setup.

Decisions, decisions...

Thanks!

Great - pleased you solved it - and thanks for sharing your experience/rudimentary fix. I'm sure this problem is quite common.

LATCHING SATA CABLES FTW! Worth the extra 10c

Although i dont doubt anything said above as its bang on the prob could also stem from a failure to F6 install the raid ahci sata driver on windows install this can as ive witnessed twice to my own annoyance seem to work fine but continously fail despit driver reinstalls the cure - A reinstall but doing the F6 driver install before scanning for drives, i think it allows the setting up of the volume information partition properly at the start of the volume (maybe not sure) but it fixed it both times:)
