Well back to my old rig.
The 8800GT is RMA.
What a way to start when going to PCI-E.

Lol!

Yeah general rule of thumb isn't it. . . . :roll::banghead:

XFX don't think so!:slap:

Had to laugh when one guy at a forum said to me there are people out there with overheating cards but they work perfectly fine.:wtf:

TPU is the only place I have had logical & rational responses.
TPU ftw!:rockout:

My card is sent, now I just have to wait.

Funny thing is I heard XFX had issues with RMAing cards when I didn't have one hassle with them.

Sent the support ticket had a few replies then they said RMA the card.
Simple although I RMA'd the card through the New Zealand distributor www.playtech.co.nz.

I think there was something wrong with the VF830 cooler as sticking it into a system fan socket didn't make one bit of difference to the speed of the fan and I made sure the fan had the maximum voltage running through it.

I think reliability just comes down to luck and how much its used my 1900xt has been going strong 2 years now Where as my standard 3870 died after 2 days.

For sure.
I have read about many people having issues with the Sapphire X1950pro AGP's but mine worked perfectly from day one and is still going strong.

On the other hand my 8800GT showed problems pretty much straight away.
I remember the first time it showed problems.
I installed STALKER, watched thw whole intro then tried to walk around in game and immediatley texture corruption and lockup.

Ye i think as things get more advanced it just leave more things to go wrong really especially when they are rush released because of consumer demands.Id rather wait for them to perfect stuff rather than bitch about there release date the best things come to those who wait.
Like all those that bought a mark 1 gts once the technology was worked on more the gt and new gts were beating it easy i bet alot kicked them selves over that lol.

Indeed.
Nothing worst than deadlines on anything.
Hardware or Games.

Also I didn't realise the XFX 8800GT xXx Zalman edition was released only very recently.
I suppose I had a taste of the performance though and it was impressive.
Most noted in S.T.A.L.K.E.R and the way the card was able to easily handle shadows compared to my X1950pro.

That's absolutely right. If a card is going to die it usually happens within the first 30 days. Naturally that's the least favorable for whoever made the card as people tend to think all cards from that person are bad since theirs failed so soon.

But video card manufacturers are putting out tens of thousands of video cards per month in the US alone and at that volume, things are going to go wrong. There's just no way around it.

At least if you dont know when you come to TPU you will know when you leave TPU.
LOL at least this forum has some really like minded members i guess when you join you get a little rub off of there experience and knowledge.
Id recommend this forum to anyone with computer troubles mainly coz it has numerous members and that means you can get a varied view and also coz there are so many people who specialise in a certain hardware.

The forums are informative and unbiased.

So what card did you get?

Further up in the thread it says I bought an XFX 8800GT xXx Zalman VF830 edition.
Most probably the last 8800GT you would expect with a core overheating issue.

I have had MSI, POV, Gigabyte and have had no issues with them at all. Obviously the OC editions are more expensive but if you want stock clocks I would just look for the best deal around as I don't think you can go wrong

HEY...i am thinking of buying this ...people say its a 2+1 = 3 phase ...compared to 3+1 phase in the original design......so...what should i do go with the alpha dog or zalman.....
http://www.siliconmadness.com/2008/02/xfx-brings-new-pcb-and-zalman-cooler-to.html

They are both alpha dog edition.

Both do not have variable fan control.

Apparently the 8800GT with the 7900GS looking cooler can get pretty hot and with no fan control it's not good.

I am currently using the Zalman VF830 equipped 8800GT XXX version.
It's fast and smooth in games with the latest WHQL driver plus image quality has gone up.
With the old driver I wasn't very impressed with the image quality at all compared to my X1950pro.
It looked dull and a little blurry at times.
But it's looking and running very well now.

You may also find the Zalman version is cheaper than some 8800GT XXX with stock cooling possibly due to the earlier ones having fan control, I don't know why XFX decided to remove the function.

Also I have been through three of them so make sure you go with a company which has a good Warranty.
First one overheated, second made a high pitched squeal and hit about 76degC and the third is a keeper.
Playing NFSC with settings maxxed out at 1280 X 1024 for a couple of hours and only 64degC max load but it is winter over here.

I always recommend the EVGA cards. I like those the best... the non-oc version is fine.
I also recommend EVGA... I also recommend XFX BFG and MSI,Gigabyte.
I would get the XFX because you can voltmod them (if you can find one) and also the warranty.I have seen that XFX cards overclock high most of the time.

eVGA's warranty is better. The overclocked versions can't be voided. Since they are already overclocked, overclocking it won't do anything to the warranty.

you can't voltmod EVGA's and not void the warranty and if you sell the EVGA card the warranty doesn't go to the other person XFX's does.

I am not trying to say one brand is better then the other... I have used BFG,Asus,XFX,EVGA and they all have been good..

Put it this way.
All the XFX Zalman VF830 versions have a fixed fan speed so no chances of getting one with a variable fan speed.
The reference may or may not have variable fan speed depending if you get an ealry revision or late revision.
