I must say I am fascinated by how much people are outraged by this, on behalf of the people that bought the card. This is despite the people displaying the most outrage not owning the card and never had the intention of buying the card in the first place. I saw it a lot with DLSS too, they same types were more furious that GTX owners were 'left out in the cold', than actual GTX owners themselves ever claimed to be.

It's like they feel this is some sort of lightning rod to channel allllll of their built up Nvidia hatred caused by many many other factors, some over a decade old, some super petty, others less so but still, proclaiming they won't touch Nv now as if that wasn't already the case.

I fear for these people that, for Nvidia, this will be rectified to all affected parties in fairly short order and it'll all blow over and Nvidia won't somehow be forced to 'pay' for all the other 'bs' people are holding on to for decades. Some of what they feel should happen following this fiasco is straight up not based in reality. I won't quote anyone, you know who you are.

Well the included adaptor actually look fugly so I hope Nvidia send out higher quality and better looking adaptors to all rtx4000 owners. But once the dust settle, single 12VHPWR cable will make for better looking build than 3x8pin PCIe clusterf.

Spot on, I hear takes like why even change it, they could have stuck to 3/4 8pins... Yeah nah, the spec isn't bad, this adapter is. Specs here to stay.

Why need new connector when there is a lot of other connectors ready available?
Standard server grade EPS power connector can handle over 300w. I only have one connector on my tesla M40 (modded to Titan X, 250w+ tdp overclocked).
4090ti need I think 3 or 4 for safety. There are loads of this EPS connector in servers, workstations....

Soldering in a connector? Why? Almost all pc connectors like ATX, SATA, Molex, PCIE, EPS... not use soldering.

Interesting: Paul postulates the problem may not be the LACK of a cable but rather the PROXIMITY of the BROKEN cable to connection, which would increase resistance as well as heat build up.

If so, then this MIGHT happen not just with nVidia cables: this might happen with ANY cable.

Further investigation is needed, i think.

EDIT

Damn typos ...

Can someone please confirm the following.

does the new connector "lead end" have gold contact? ...Photos on-line tend to show its silver in color.

My Seasonic PSU leads clearly shows its gold in colour, indicating its gold plated. Both my GFX card socket shows it's more silver in colour than gold, but I think it's still gold plated.

Very reasonable take, but I just want to add that flagship or BFGPU tier cards often have bad failures. RTX 3090 literally fried VRMs, Fury X had pump failures, R9 290X had early solder joint failures, some early RTX 2080 Ti died for whatever reason, GTX 480 overheated easily, GTX 590 fried some VRMs, R9 390X was too loud to use, RX 5700 XT had too low starting voltage. It's actually more rare to have a top tier card without some fatal failure and usually just a tier lower model is way more reliable. I just found this issue interesting, decided to create a thread documenting issue, but it seems that quite a lot of people decided that it's nVidia hating thread.

They already had their asses on the line with the relentless RT push that just isn't making waves
Is this satire? RT is in the current gen consoles down to the steam deck, all new GPU hardware, and is in increasingly more games. If Nvidia already had their asses on the line (to you/according to you), RT is one of the least coherent reasons for that.

IMO the brand damage for your average users will come from how they deal with affected customers. To some people, seemingly yourself included, the brand damage was already done, this is just another one to add to the list.

Its not satire, them pushing it ahead has been a monumental waste of money, it must be carried by more revenue or maintaining profits and we have yet to see how that will work out in the near future without mining/PoW. And they can't go back. 'RT is in the current gen consoles' - but not in a way that it forces AMD to push it ahead, or keep making strides on it. Note the NVDA share is slowly going less 'free-fall' but it still looks remarkably like those shit coins going bearish ;) Still correcting, or will it persist?

The market position for AMD right now is a lot less risky. Nvidia must surge forward because its their story now, AMD doesn't and still maintains a reasonably samy market share regardless; after all, those consoles and Deck aren't going to have a new GPU anytime soon - and if they do, why wouldn't AMD push another chip forward? They already virtually have it on their current crop /upcoming RDNA3 in terms of raw perf. Nvidia doesn't- no CPU.

Some form of RT 'in increasingly more games' (logic says that happens with any tech, VR is the same, in 'increasingly more games' but its not taking meaningful share in gaming over the course of many years now), is not what I'm saying will die a slow death. It will slowly creep into games, sure. But Nvidia already has to pull all the stops to keep moving it forward and even then... its not enough, traction is very low, cost to developers (and the uncertainty of gaining anything in competitive product placement) is still rather high, and the performance hit is still immense; and, we're not even remotely near a complete implementation either. Current (DLSS3) performance boost is obtained by harming latency. Not exactly a great path forward imho.

AMD said it right on the eve of Turing: only when you have useful and beneficial RT effects at a low performance hit on midrange/commonly used GPUs, will it really start to matter. They knew what they were heading towards and how slow this road of progress really is. Nvidia still lies to you saying everything just works all the time and 'good' is only getting 'better'. They need bags of money, still, to convince PC first devs to implement RT, and everytime it arrives in revamped games, the interest for said game has waned. (see: Metro Exodus Enhanced, Cyberpunk) I mean how strange is it, that Nvidia has to push Cyberpunk's fantastic new RT pass to show us how great it all is. Its a 2020 game. And it still won't lock to 60 FPS @ 4K either - that just says it all, right there. Is that truly awe inspiring over 3 generations of push? I don't think so...

It also once again, for the umpteenth time, confirms what's been clear for about two decades now: PC hardware chasing ahead of consoles isn't really paying off much in terms of better gaming. The consoles determine where gaming is headed, and their baseline perf is what devs scope for.

There are multiple perspectives here. For me as a prospective buyer of a product, brand damage happened because of this cable fail, but not directly due to RT - it has more to do with all the fail surrounding it, the inflated pricing it creates, and the limited benefit accompanying it, etc. For me as an analyst looking at the market, the above applies. These two perspectives do overlap, of course.

It's not just RT for nV. Their data center investment, which went to questionable AI/ML market is a big risk. Market is very uncertain there, tech can't be repurposed for something else much (RT and DLSS are just repurposements, nothing more). If nV fails at that market they are going to hurt a lot, basically half of their current revenue.

Can some mod change thread name to Nvidia bashing thread, cause there is nothing related to power cable being discussed here ;)

Maybe change to "Everything wrong with Nvidia", then people can expect what are being discussed here.

Yeha that or locking it, it's going absolutely nowhere except every excuse to drag them through the mud for everything beside the cable itself. Doesn't seem much worth replying, people have made up their mind long ago and dive straight on anything negative that happens to pour gasoline on the torch and sharpen the pitchfork. Even if I made excellent points and arguments, there's just nothing to be gained.
